I've been doing an extensive personal study on the history of Venice, trying to garner as much information as I can on the changing politics, culture, and attitudes of the city, but I have hit something of a brick wall when it comes to the turn of the 19th century.
To be short, I find it difficult to find any good English resources on Venice at its collapse and subsequent loss of independence to the Austrian Empire. To be specific, I need to know a few things...
1: What was Venice's contribution to the Napoleonic Wars, if anything at all? Did they have a standing army of their own? Did they contribute to any larger armies? Where did Venetian soldiers fight? Ect.
2: What exactly did the Austrians do to change the government of Venice after obtaining it? I know the styles of Metternich were to destroy nationalism to make the empire stronger, but that is terribly vague. I need specifics, such as who governed the city, where they governed, and how they governed.
3: Law enforcement. Was Venice occupied by Austrian soldiers? Or did they recruit natives into their ranks? Did they have their own peacekeeping force, or was it all just a smaller part of the greater Austrian army?
4: Venetian native reactions to the occupation of their city. I know there were a few minor revolts, and later in the mid 19th century a larger revolt, but again, specifics are vague. What happened in these revolts? What sparked them? Beyond the revolts, how did the Venetian natives take to the Austrian occupancy, considering it banished many of their ways such as Carnevale?
Cheers in advance to all who help me out.
