I subbed in a elementary school today, and made it a point to look at kids' hair color - I had paid attention to that before, but most kids have light hair, very few with brown one, which changes in high school - then I notice light haired kids, because they are fewer than the dark haired. So I'm not sure how much hair color can be a phenotypal mark, particularly in ethnically mixed populations, since it changes along one's personal timeline.
Most Bulgarians are Mediterranean type - some tanned skin, darker hair and eyes, shorter and wider bodies; light colors are rare, recessive, as they call them. I get used here to lighter colors, and every time I go to Bulgaria I get amazed how everyone seems darker.
