I really enjoy combat simulation games but I'm
interested in finding some books on real combat
experiences that soldiers have experienced
throughout history. I don't want detailed military
histories but books that will tell me about actual
combat experiences and the weapons and tactics
used and how these evolved within each specific
operational environment. Does anyone know of
anything suitable? Or are they also searching?

Maybe you'd like to check some of the most accurate fictional accounts of war ever written in English: The Red Badge of Courage by Stephen Crane and For Whom the Bell Tolls by Ernest Hemingway. As for non-fiction, I guess John Keegan's The Face of Battle would be a good starting point.

Im currently reading "quartered safe out here" by George MacDonald Fraser. It his autobiography of when he fought as a 19 year old private in Burma for the final year of the war. It fololows mostly the adventures of his squad, 6 men and their activities, combat, patrol, stealing rations and killing time between these activities.

Fraser motivation for writing it is accuracy, he explains each action in detail and the contexts of the time. He critisises modern revisions and often quotes the official account and proves them wrong. Eg: the official hstory of WWII confirms there were no PIATs deployed in Burma. Fraser points out he carried one for several months and very effective it was....

rfinally the book is well written, profound and humourous as one would expect of the Flashman author and currently the finest living writer in the English language...

Thanks for the recommendation for the George
MacDonald Fraser book. I hadn't realised that he had
written a personal account. I think the Falshman
books are brilliant so I will definately give his
autobiography a go.

On another topic I saw there was a poll for whether
the T-34 was better than the Panzer - does anyone
know if there are any books that deal specifically with
that topic??????

Another Flashman fan on the forum.....

I actually met George MacDonald-Fraser last month. A really nice guy, as well as being incredibly talented (makes you sick doesn't it)

Anyway the answers to your original question and your new one could possibly be found here.
