Topic: Who is Your Favorite American President? Posted: 19-Feb-2012 at 20:42 |
Tomorrow is President's Day, and in connection with it I think this would be a relevant topic. So, who is your favorite American president? Mine is Lincoln, more for psychological reasons than for political, I suspect - I totally suck in politics. Next after him - Theodore Roosevelt, with his interesting personal life and the adventures he went for. I suppose that Francklin Delano Roosevelt did great with internal politics, after all the US welfare system started with him. I feel sore about the Yalta decisions though, and no matter how I try to be non-personal, I most lamentably fail in that .

I'm glad to hear such an opinion about George W. Bush. He is too much reviled and all kinds of negative things are said about hi, I believe because he is a figure of the current history, and the events that happened in his time are still too politically loaded, and rife with subjectivism.

I actually like most of your choices, CV. I like Truman and Reagan, but regrettably know little about Polk, Ike and Ford. Reagan was the archdevil of my communist youth .

Jefferson and Adams are like the two sides of the American coin, IMHO; but I'm not very versed in US history, so I'm not so positive that my opinion here is any good. Those were the last words of Adams, right "Jefferson still lives", and like couple of months later Jefferson died too.

Yes, Jefferson & Adams were polar opposites on a great many things, but also, alike in many other respects. They were close friends at the end of their lives.

Adams did utter something to that effect, "Jefferson lives", "Jefferson survives" but Mr. Adams was wrong. Jefferson had died in bed at Monticello a few hours earlier.

A side note about presidential deaths involving the great trio of Jefferson-Adams-Monroe. Jefferson and Adams both died on 4 July 1826. Madison died exactly five years later to the day, on 4 July 1831.
Bonus: Calvin Coolidge, the 30th President, was born on July 4th, 1872

So, it should be an American saying "Beware the 4th of July, not the "Ides of March"?

You're not far off. The month of July has taken a few presidents.
1. Jefferson 2. Adams 3. Monroe 4. Taylor 5. Van Buren 6. A. Johnson 7. Grant

Cal Coolidge is one of my favs. He basically did absolutely nothing while in office, which is exactly what the people wanted at that time.

FDR for saving the US from depression and leading his country against the Nazis. If the modern day reactionaries shut their mouths and supported Obama's reforms (instead of demonising him for being black and taxing the rich) Americans would have more jobs and a better quality of life

So if don't support the current president, then they are automatically racist?
I'm doing everything in my voting power and influence in making sure the current president is just a sad footnote in history. He is so out of touch with reality it is painful. We cannot as a nation survive four more years of his wild spending. And please, no blaming President Bush for every bumbled effort by this current president does.

Well, I don;t understand anything form politics, but Obama so much reminds me of the communist political leaders on my youth, in his particular way of speaking, appearing and appealing.Communism failed economically for a reason. Not that I'm saying that Obama is a socialist, I am not so interested in the dichotomy econimic-politics as to dig enough deep, I just express an impression. However, the other candudates for presidency are far less attractive and have charm that I'd rate ranging form -3 to 0; and too many people vote for charm. Obama is inspring, I can't deny that; it;s just...I had headr too many inspired speeches to be able to buy into them. I have no idea for whom I'm going to vote, in the last elections I wasn't a citizen yet, so I couldn't vote, now I probably should, but ...I don't believe what Obama goes for is realistic, and the other candidates sound kinda stale.
It maybe a good idea to make a thread about the coming elections, so to help un-interested-in-politics members like me to make up a reasonable decision. Who want to volunteer to start and run a thread like that?

Very good idea. But, I'd rather see one when the field is settled: one vs one. Right now no one knows who'll be the GOP final candidate. Politics is such an emotional issue, it can derail a thread faster than a hive of termites on old wood.
