Topic: Greatest Empire? Posted: 10-Feb-2012 at 19:23 |
Of course, the British Empire covered the largest land area, just surpassing the Mongol Empire. The Brits also dominated the seas aswell. Though do these stats really reflect that it was the greatest. What is your opinion? what empire do you think was the best.

The British empire was definitely the biggest, but the Roman empire lasted longer. From 27 BC until 1453 the Romans ruled over the civilised world and enabled the rest of Europe to reach the level of technological progress that started the Renaissance and colonisation of the New World

True. Perhaps circumstances favoured the British, afterall they were mostly up against Africans and natives etc armed with no more than spears. The Romans certainly had more class around them, look at some of the amazing sights eg the Colosseum. Meanwhile, the Mongols conquered vast lands in so little time using their tactics. Forgive me, I'm only 16 and ive only just registered to this. I hope to establish a foothold and get to grips with it soon enough

Welcome to the forum.
The Mongol empire was big but not built to last like the Roman empire was. I would say the Romans were the greatest empire in antiquity. They influenced many aspects of society today.
The Mongols simply were not good administrators. Their empire deteriorated rather quickly, whereas other empires like Rome and Persia were better organized and lasted much longer.

I agree entirely. We must also put things into context, at that time 27BC-300AD+, the Romans held more territory than any other power and were able to hold onto it for hundreds of years and even as it diminished the Eastern Empire lived on and Roman influence is still felt today. The British held a different mentality to the Romans, the British Empire was built on the purpose of expanding and rapidly conquering new areas with the help of ships and modern techonology. Therefore it was obviously much easier to expand compared with the Romans. Forgive me if my historys a little hasy.

Yes, the British did have a different mentality. The main
goal of British expansion was profit and trade. They based their empire on commerce
and capitalism.
The Romans on the other hand, had a policy of "aggressive defense", that is, they were
always paranoid about their neighbors and regarded any rival as a threat, and would initiate
pre-emptive attacks. So they didn't consider themselves to be the
aggressors, and under this policy that most expansion occurred.

Considering the known world, the greatest empire was certainly the Achaemenid empire.

The Achaemenids were on par with the Romans I think. I wouldn't consider Alexander's empire "great" because it was just based off the Achaemenids' infrastructure. So in essence Alexander did not "create" an empire, he simply took an existing one.

Overall, there are a number of factors that determine what we call a 'great empire'. You must take into consideration the range between the traditional start and end of the empire. Its sustainability/order. Its military experiences and its control over vast lands. In conclusion, I must announce the Romans as the victors. The Roman Empire at the time covered most of the known world and ventures overseas was limited. Also, population was significantly lower, obviously limiting a number of things. Technically, Rome had already conquered so much land when it was declared an empire. The Western Empire ended around 400-500 but the Eastern Empire continued to flourish and it ended in 1453 after the Ottomans sacked Constantinople. If you count the Byzantine Empire, the Roman Empire technically lasted more than 1,000 years, moreover, the republic of rome lasted hundreds of years and expanded across Europe, though we wont count that because it was a REPUBLIC.Subsequently, the British Empire came to an end in 1997, after 200 years of domination. Some say it lasted 500 years, others 200. Nevertheless, it cannot match with the Romans.

Ancient? Concur the Roman. Modern Era? Britain has a natural choice priority but the US since it's inception has had a similar influence for good or bad in the 200 plus....equal to or even greater then Britain. Medieval is another story.

American influence since 1900 has been significant and dominating but the U.S has never been declared an empire. Though I suppose it certainly acts like one, the War on Terror is a grand example. However, American dominance lies with the media and culture. They control so much in the world it is unreal.Note: numerous nations around the globe have U.S military present, plus many bases.

Roman empire was just an empire alongside other empires and can't be considered as the greatest empire even at its own time, it is true that Romans could bring civilization to a large number of uncivilized lands but Mesopotamia, the cradle of civilization, and several other civilized lands belonged to other empires.

The greatest would have to be the Holy Roman Empire. They lasted for so long!

By that I assume you mean the Germanic Holy Roman Empire right? **Please change the color of your text. It is difficult for older members to read and Red is generally a color reserved for the staff...for emphasis on a violation. I have already mentioned this to you once. It is also commomnly seen as an hostile response or impolite type color and is not necessary. If you require emphasis then use your bold function. Thanks for your cooperation. CV/Moderator

In the western world, I believe the Roman Empire was the greatest because it achieved the most and has the longest impact on civilization.

The Holy Roman Empire was neither holy, roman or an Empire.

Yeah true From what I know it was a fairly large confederation of tiny city states and kinships spanning across present-day Germany and surrounding areas. It was not really and empire as such and did not have that expansionist attitude. Nor was it Roman, as you said.

Hi I would like say something about the your sentence if you want to comment about something firstly , you need to look into some information because as far as I understand you comment , you don't know about history so many things . please to be honestly you should learn something , to be conscious and you can speak more clearly . in the world's history the biggest empire was established by turkish people . it is absolutely fact . most of the empire was established by turkish . for example , Hun empire , great selcuklu , göktürk , ottoman empire , etc . so there are so many empire . as a result we need to read history objective. yes at the same time there were so many another empire as rome , bysantioum ....
