Robo-mule hauls military gear & follows like a dogPublished February 08, 2012-TechMediaNetwork
U.S. troops who carry as much as 100 pounds of gear could soon get a robotic mule capable of shouldering their burdens in the toughest terrain. Such a robot recently showed how it can follow a person and navigate around trees and rocks while climbing a hill in its first outdoor test — but it might someday follow spoken commands like a huge, obedient dog. The four-legged, headless "LS3" robot evolved as the quieter, faster and tougher version of Boston Dynamics' "BigDog" robotfunded by the U.S. military's DARPA research arm. Upcoming trials will test the robot's ability to carry 400 pounds on a tough 20-mile trek without any refueling for 24 hours. |

Having humped that sheet many a mile at 50-125 pounds I endorse this message. Ntl.. it will be impractical to provide one per as cost prohibitions will win out. Consequently, determining the ratio and criticality of usage and equipment hauling priorities will win out....if acquisition is even approved. Weapons systems and ammo and other sensitive items will gain the nod on load plan prior to an individual Troop's gear. Bet. However....There is many and many a long days wait between RD and then A. Trust me. Otoh... the WW1 dead are rolling in their graves as we speak. Probably bemoaning the pansy ass idea, as they would view it, in the first place .

War high-tech gear or the ideas to come, seem more and more like a Sci-Fi movie coming true.

It might be useful in conditions inaccessible for vehicles (for example: arctic or mountainous terrain)

That and as an IED type insertion bomb...where it might be air dropped in miles from a target and 'walks' in to accomplish it's mission of detonation....preferably Tac Nuke. Although the exo would have to have a more realistic mule look from a distance....but given tac nukes what's a male or two. eh 'Robby the robot' it's not.... but their trying to get there.

Wouldn't it be easier and cheaper to just use a real packhorse or mule? You wouldn't have to worry about keeping it refueled, plus it could be eaten in emergencies

The tech has long gone past that Nick ole son. The doctrine wont support it. To slow even if reliable.
