According to that research  http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/j.1469-1809.1949.tb02431.x/pdf  in Great Britain in 1943, like 60.77"/like 1.57 cm/ on 135 pounds for males and 60.22"/1.52 cm/ on 119 pounds on average for the whole population.

I heard stories from my grandfather that during the time when Bulgaria was a monarchy, before the end of WW2, the men that would be accepted as professional soldiers only had to be healthy, and their measures didn't matter; but men who became officers, with military education had to be tall, he didn't specify how tall, but he was 168 and this was considered tall.
For Bulgaria if I remember right, between the wars the average was about 160 cm on 60 kg for men.
