Sam Chamberlain was a sergeant in the US Cavalry during the Mexican War. He made many paintings of his time spent in the army, including the hanging of the San Patricios, a knife-fight, and a duel he participated in

TJ and I are old amigo's with tugs and bashs and arguments and confirmations and congratulations.. for a long time.

Ntl, I continue to respect enormously his credentials.  He is an superb educator.. so am I. (Check his school board and see) He is Hispanic... so am I mestizo. Best bet fer you lot.... is pay attention.... because he is neither bent with an agenda nor so unwilling to seek another's views and opinions or suffer a contrary viewpoint. Me? LOLLOLLOLLOLLOL

And that remains rare.

More importantly he remains a scholar I trust and value...whether here or on another topic.

And if you don't value my opinion then remember.... to kiss my N Texas ass. Wink

^ Goodness, that sounded nice.

I enjoy reading about the Mexican-American War on account that it

involves Texas and the sheer politics and military agenda that went into

the 'war'.

Chamberlain rejoined the army during the Civil War and was promoted to general in 1865. He named his daughters after his Mexican girlfriends and painted these pictures for their benefit

Technically, he couldn't have been a cavalryman in the Mexican War. We had two Regiments of Dragoons and one of Mounted Rifles. When the Cavalry Arm was formed after the war (1855), the1st and 2nd Dragoons became the 1st and 2nd Cavalry, and the Regt. of Mounted Rifles became the 3rd Cavalry. The post war 1` and 2nd Cavalry were likewise redesignated the 4 and 5th Cavalry Regiments. The 5th Cavalry, whose chosen nickname was the "Black Knights" were commanded by Albert Sydney Johnston, whose second in command was LTC Robert E. Lee. Up until the end of the Civil War, those were the only Cavalry Regiments in the Regular Army.

That might explain the orange piping which was regulation for dragoons until the 1850s. Only one mounted regiment wore yellow piping during the Mexican War, though i can't remember which one

Volunteers sought for 1846 US-Mexico War diary project

In 1846 a young soldier named Zenas Matthews traveled across Texas to fight in the 1846 US-Mexican War. Along the way he kept a diary that ended up in the Special Collections of Southwestern University's library. The diary is now online, and Southwestern and FromThePage.com now invite volunteers to join a crowdsourcing project to annotate, index, and help clarify difficult readings of Matthews' diary.

Matthews joined Gen. Taylor's army on the Rio Grande and his diary includes descriptions of the Siege of Monterrey and the taking of the Bishop's Palace. The project also includes Matthews' service papers: a 1846 honorable discharge signed by C. B. Acklen and Col. John C. Hays; a 1849 letter certifying that Matthews served and was honorably discharged, signed by John C. Hays; and a 1887 Declaration for Service Pension.

The manuscript has been transcribed by volunteer Scott Patrick of the San Jacinto Descendants, but we seek additional commentary as well as indexing of names, places, events, and other subjects. Be a part of history!

That's a good question.  Let me see what I can find out from the folks at Southwestern, and maybe see what's in the pension record.  I haven't tried looking for Matthews in the Civil War records yet, either.

It might have been the 2nd Dragoons serving under Zachary Taylor. This trooper has a yellow band around his cap
