It is really difficult to name a place. After the rich history, every culture develop own name and during the time, borders have expanded or have gotton smaller. This is topic for Turcomania: forgotten land between Armenia and Kurdistan.

Turcoman:"The term 'Oghuz' was gradually supplanted among the Turks themselves by Türkmen, 'Turcoman', from the mid tenth century on, a process which was completed by the beginning of the thirteenth." (viki)

I guess, it is a memeroial for white sheep and black sheep

big turcomania

a bit close version

Turcomania is sometimes in north as this map, but sometimes mostly in north Iraq

There is two turcomania in this map: one is northwest side of big lake, one is south side of  lake in Iran

west side of yellow region "tur - co -mans"
In this map it is shown be in iraq

Turcomania could be considered as a land which was ruled by Turkmens, not the land of Turkmens. There are already Turkmenistan and Turkmensahra in the northeast of Iran, as their lands.

Historically, word Turkmen doesn't mean just Turkmen(people of Turkmenistan) all Azeris and Turks of Turkey are Turkmen too.

Marco polo called a different place as Turcomania(central anatolia) and he said that turkomans, greeks and armenians were living there. http://en.wikisource.org/wiki/The_Travels_of_Marco_Polo/Book_1/Chapter_2

I mean that it doesn't proof Turk majority in there but proofs that turks have been there till today

and
http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=Ts49AAAAIAAJ&pg=PA479&lpg=PA479&dq=turcomania+history&source=bl&ots=t7h-D7pOcL&sig=5WCQuoXu4A8jLbMT_oO6AIt8RJQ&hl=tr&ei=TeTgTri-HYSu8gP2hfXWBA&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&redir_esc=y#v=onepage&q=turcomania%20history&f=false  page 479

The writers have told that name origin is not after 1071, it is 844

Modern Turks. (just real Turkic ones) and People in Turkmenistan have same origin. Both of them came from Oghuz tribe and languages are very similar, from same branch (Oghuz Branch)

Main 3 groups of Turkic languages

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oghuz_languages

Turcomania is a place where these people live in, in near east and it should be early from of Turkey

That is right, common ethnicity name of Anatolia and Azerbaijan was Turkmen.

Today's Iraqi Turkmens speak dialect of Azeri Turkish actually, and they are still known as Turkmen.
