The Germans were ahead in leaps and bounds.  The Japanese Zero was only invincible through the eyes of green American pilots.  The faults in the Zero are too many to list.

Germany had better planes in the Luftwaffe. Japanese were very effective in WWII though.

The Zero was a very good plane by any standards at the outbreak of the war and Japanese pilots and tactics excellent.

German planes were overated. The ME-109 was an excellent plane but the ME-110 poor. However the Luftwaffe high command made a major error ordering all veteran pilots into the ME-110. Heinkels carried far to smaller load and JU-88's and Stuka way to slow and vulnerable. They also suffered a lot in command at the very highest level. The quality of the German pilots covered up a lot of flaws in the Luftwaffe.

The AA crews of the Battleship HMS Prince of Wales and battlecruiser HMS Repulse were shocked and stunned by the speed and performance of the Japanese torpedo bombers which attacked and sank them on 10 December 1941 off the coast of Malaya.

Japanese aircraft were state of the art in 1941, and more than a match for the allied aircraft sent against them. Thankfully they were generally unable to improve their machines very much during the war while the USA  was able to take military aviation to a new level.

However, irrespective of the technology, an aircraft is only as good as it's pilot, and the Japanese pilots were superb.

Had  the RAF in Malaya been equipped with Spitfire's instead of Brewster Buffalo's maybe things might have turned out differently.
