'' ArchAeologists have unearthed a 'zombie' graveyard in Co Roscommon dating from the 8th Century.The gruesome discovery was made by a team from the Institute of Technology Sligo, which discovered that skeletons were interred with large rocks placed in their mouths to prevent them rising from the dead at a historic site overlooking Lough Key, Co Roscommon.''

We need the General to get on this and do a reconn for us.Thumbs Up

This seems very fishy to me. I've never heard of "Zombies" in the Irish Pagan Religion, never mind at a time when Ireland was devoutly Catholic. In fact, it's completely at odds with what we know of the clan system & church & society. I cannot think of why a stone should be placed in the mouth but I do think other more plausible theories will have to be proposed before this becomes a story we can sink our teeth into ...

250 years after the conversion of the country?

However, you're right, it could be. But we'd need a local historian to research it for us.

To me the rocks in the mouth is one of those things you do to stop the spirit of the dead from doing something to those who killed them. Otherwise it could possibly retribution on banshees or cannibals maybe.
What a handsome figure of a dragon. No wonder I fall madly in love with the Alani Dragon now, the avatar, it's a gorgeous dragon picture.

I though zombies were African? In Europe the flesh-eating walking dead are known as ghouls (similar but not identical to bloodsucking vampires)

It is.

West Africa..South Africa.. in the west.. Hati etc. It is probably a loose usage of a fashionable term now the rage viz  the entertainment multi-media. As is the resurgence of vampire lovers. The General raises some cogent points in his post and in particular that dealing with the fact no where have I ever heard either of this fear in the  Irish pagan mythology.

And here I reference a solid and credible view expressed in the seminal work by PW Joyce;

A Concise History of Ireland

Irish Customs

87. Burial. Three modes of disposing of the dead were practised in ancient Ireland. First mode: the body was buried as at present. Second: sometimes the body of a king or warrior was placed standing up in the grave, fully accoutred and armed. Third: the body was burned and the ashes were deposited in the grave in an ornamental urn of baked clay.

Nothing there about rocks in mouths etc. for whatever reason. And while I wont out right discount the theories espoused by the lead archo in the article...this is the first I have ever heard that version in that specificity as being gospel...no pun intended... never heard of it in relationship to Druidic custom either.

But that merely means I might need to do more research.Smile

Ah P.W. Joyce ... infinitely better than his literary namesake, wouldn't you say?

One of my favourite historians.

Indeed. For poets there is none better then WB Yeats.

Sailing to Byzantium

THAT is no country for old men. The young
In one another's arms, birds in the trees
- Those dying generations - at their song,
The salmon-falls, the mackerel-crowded seas,
Fish, flesh, or fowl, commend all summer long
Whatever is begotten, born, and dies.
Caught in that sensual music all neglect
Monuments of unageing intellect.

An aged man is but a paltry thing,
A tattered coat upon a stick, unless
Soul clap its hands and sing, and louder sing
For every tatter in its mortal dress,
Nor is there singing school but studying
Monuments of its own magnificence;
And therefore I have sailed the seas and come
To the holy city of Byzantium.

O sages standing in God's holy fire
As in the gold mosaic of a wall,
Come from the holy fire, perne in a gyre,
And be the singing-masters of my soul.
Consume my heart away; sick with desire
And fastened to a dying animal
It knows not what it is; and gather me
Into the artifice of eternity.

Once out of nature I shall never take
My bodily form from any natural thing,
But such a form as Grecian goldsmiths make
Of hammered gold and gold enamelling
To keep a drowsy Emperor awake;
Or set upon a golden bough to sing
To lords and ladies of Byzantium
Of what is past, or passing, or to come.

Perhaps they were criminals? Recently a skeleton was discovered in Italy with a brick in its mouth to stop it rising up and drinking the blood of the living. Was this graveyard on consecrated ground, or near an undesirable place like a rubbish heap or gallows?
