I think the author must have a pretty broad definition of "surprise attack".  For example, the German attack on Poland was a surprise.  Following this, the French had months of warning that a German attack of some sort was a strong possibility and that such an attack would probably include Blitzkrieg tactics by very well trained men.

Agreed nor was their any mention of the Ardennes offensive. Like you I am satisfied there can always be better examples.
