Topic: Jezebel: Whore-queen of Israel Posted: 12-May-2011 at 21:47 |
Jezebel was a Phoenician princess who married Jewish king Ahab and persuaded him to abandon his religion and worship Baal. She is remembered for causing great suffering as queen, persecuting Jews who refused to betray their faith, holding wild orgies, encouraging human sacrifice, and decking herself out in makeup and jewelery like a prostitute while the people suffered through famine and war. Eventually her tyranny was too much to bear and she was thrown out of the window by her own servants and her corpse eaten by the dogs
Was Jezebel as wicked as the bible claims or was her bad reputation created to discredit a powerful proto-feminist who challenged the patriarchal religious-based hierarchy?

Given the propensity of the ancient Hebrews to maintain ethnic separatism as instructed by the Law of Moses more probably the former as she would have been and did indeed become a convenient scapegoat for the wickedness ascribed her. The latter is a fascinating proposition I have never really considered. Good stuff Nick.

Women are oft accused of changing the religion of their husband. It has happened often in my family, and it became at one time, it seems, a breaking point when religious affiliation became a more attractive proposition than familial.
Such is life, and such is just how far a man will go to please a "good" wife!

Ahab's willingness to give in to his wife is evidence he was a weak king. Jezebel had him wrapped around her finger and exerted ever more power until the king was reduced to a mere puppet

Even so, he would have to have been a useless king to put his lust before the good of his people

Eve manipulates and leads Adam into temptation , and Jezebel does the same to Ahab, quite a theme the bible has there.

What a handsome figure of a dragon. No wonder I fall madly in love with the Alani Dragon now, the avatar, it's a gorgeous dragon picture.

Cecil B. DeMille made millions on that frame of reference. As far as I can tell the sterotype still exsists. Jezebel's that is.

And, just who/whom is to decide if she was really evil? Can any of us question the source?
I sort of like her and resent her violent death.

It depends on what you consider evil. Most people would agree worshipping false gods, sacrificing children, starting a civil war, forcing people to give up their ancestral religion, dressing immodestly, and committing depraved sex-acts are wicked

It isn't unusual for the Bible to show women as the "daughters of Eve", i.e. natural sinners.

True but not as many get the rep that Jezebel got. We are in reference to Hebrews here I presume.

I think she earned her reputation. As noted above, women in powerful places can and could then accomplish much, for good and evil, with their particular form of influence. King Solomon himself was led from his native faith to follow foreign gods because of his many foreign wives.

Can we actually trust the bible to be telling the truth though, and not just some moral story.

An educated person trusts the bible the same as every other book. There is inevitably a lot of embellishment but the basic story is based on fact

Nick asked above;

Well Nick, if I might well be a little risque?, it seems from the painting shown above, "She looks good going down?"

I don't think so. Jezebel lived 900 years before Cleopatra
