Do you know some real gates, walls or other structures with names that some way or the other refer to the hell?
 Here is one. The 13th century Helpoort (Hellgate) in the medieval citywall of Maastricht, Netherlands:
   Other side of the Hellgate. Man on its way out.

There's a cave at Castleton, Derbyshire known as the Devil's Arse which was once believed to be the entrance to hell. This is the place where they filmed the Silver Chair

Perhaps it was near the city gallows. Criminals would often be executed outside the city and buried under the scaffold. It may have been called hellgate because it was the last place a prisoner would walk through before leaving his mortal life
