Perhaps the most under rated of the American Cavalry commanders to participate in the American CW...(short of Merritt) and later conflicts with Native Americans....he ntl was perhaps the best unsung hero... tactician.... and supporter of natives treaty rights during his distinguished career in American military history. His only challengers, later, might be Gen's G. Crook and N. Miles.
His career was amazing-sucessful and decisive. He is the reason why the legendary Comanche-Kiowa were brought to bay during the Red River War...and alas, forced on to the reservation system. But even in victory, he honored his opponets. And while he may or may not have suffered from a disease that ultimately closed his career...he was always a warrior and always a fighter....
More importantly he was and remains a legendary Cavalry Scout and commander of the same; whose missions oft ...time required...
action...courage...loyalty...commitment..honor..dedication...perserverance...discipline and damn little rewards or accolades from those they conducted them for.
He was Brgiadier General RS Mackenzie. USA.
