Any regular viewer of BBCs QI will be familiar with the concept of the earth having more than one moon.
"The Earth has two moons (forfeit: one). Cruithne, whose orbit was discovered in 1997, is a 3-mile (4.8 km) asteroid sometimes described as Earth's second moon. Cruithne orbits the Earth every 770 years. The name "Cruithne" has a Celtic derivation."

Sun Storms May Slam Earth WednesdayBy Mike Wall Published December 28, 2011 | Space.com
Particles ejected by recent solar storms are due to slam into Earth over the next few days, possibly causing super-charged northern lights displays and temporary radio blackouts in some areas, experts say. On Monday (Dec. 26), the sun unleashed a massive eruption of solar plasma known as a coronal mass ejection (CME). The CME's fast-moving charged particles should squarely strike Earth's magnetic field at about 3:20 p.m. EST (2020 GMT) Wednesday, give or take seven hours, according to the website Spaceweather.com. |

There's the rub, what if one doesn't watch the BBC? I only occasionally watch that channel, and then only on BBC-America for Star Trek Next Generation.

Titan: A Wet World Not Far From Earth- By Adam Mann

Though Saturn's largest moon, Titan, is a small, cold world orbiting on the outskirts of the solar system, it actually boasts many familiar features. “Titan is fascinating because it has some surprising properties so similar to Earth,” said planetary scientistOded Aharonson from the California Institute of Technology. “It has a liquid which erodes channels, an atmosphere, a hydrologic cycle, and many other parallels.” Chief among Titan’s interesting qualities is that it's the only body other than Earth where liquids are known to flow in large concentrations on the surface. Because average temperatures there are -300 degrees Fahrenheit, these liquids are not water. Instead, hydrocarbons such as methane and ethane rain down from clouds, course over the landscape in rivers and eventually pour out into large lakes and seas. |

Smokin' hot island rises up from depths of the Red Sea
By Brett Israel OurAmazingPlanet updated 12/28/2011 3:45:21 PM ET
The Red Sea has a new inhabitant: a smoking island.
The island was created by a wild eruption that occurred in the Red Sea earlier this month. It is made of loose volcanic debris from the eruption, so it may not stick around long.
According to news reports, fishermen witnessed lava fountains reaching up to 90 feet (30 meters) tall on Dec. 19, which is probably the day the eruption began, said Erik Klemetti, a volcanologist at Denison University in Granville, Ohio. Ash plumes were seen emanating from the spot Dec. 20 and Dec. 22 by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer, or MODIS, on NASA's Terra and Aqua satellites. The Ozone Monitoring Instrument on NASA's Aura satellite detected elevated levels of sulfur dioxide, further indicating an eruption. By Dec. 23, what looked like a new island had appeared in the Red Sea off the west coast of Yemen. |

How Beavers Helped to Build AmericaBy Jennifer Viegas Published December 29, 2011| Discovery News
Beavers, once abundant and widespread in the Northern Hemisphere, helped to forge the ground underneath many Americans’ feet.
The team behind a new study, published in the January 2012 issue of Geology, used ground-penetrating radar to detect buried beaver dams -- revealing how beaver activity up to thousands of years ago affected sedimentation and left its lasting mark within North America's ground.
“Ecologists have estimated that, prior to the arrival of Europeans in North America, anywhere from 60 to 400 million beavers inhabited the continent, with a geographic range estimated at 15 million square kilometers,” co-author Ellen Wohl told Discovery News. |

China Reveals Space Plans Through 2016
Published December 29, 2011 | Associated Press
BEIJING – China plans to launch space labs and manned ships and prepare to build space stations over the next five years, according to a plan released Thursday that shows the country's space program is gathering momentum. China has already said its eventual goals are to have a space station and put an astronaut on the moon. It has made methodical progress with its ambitious lunar and human spaceflight programs, but its latest five-year plan beginning next year signals an acceleration. |
