To help counter food shortages, King George VI authorized the ploughing of 1,500 acres of Windsor Great Park to plant cereal crops.

During the Second World War, George resumed his father's practice of making a Christmas broadcast.
The King was so much moved by the bravery of the ordinary civilians during the bombing that he introduced the George Cross and the George Medal. These were medals for heroism that could be awarded to those outside the armed forces.

Ill buy the former but truth is even in the 'Nam era' the Bob Hope Shows etc were a colossal security nightmare.

As for Winny.... lad had guts....even if they were heavily imbibed later in life. but his desired presence was for ego not strat-tac considerations.

As for the King? A brave man no doubt. He earned my respect at Jutland on board HMS Collingwood.

Amen.

Unless of course.. it was Raquel Welch in her prime, doing a hot show, or similar..

Addit: I did read that KGVI did expressly forbid British PM WS Churchill
from landing with the troops on D-day, much to the relief of the military..

It was expected. Leaders do that to motivate. otoh it's a pain in the ass when ever notorieties celebs-politicos etc show up in the combat zone.

Focus shifts to their security and assets are reassigned.

When in reality the average trooper could give a shitt less if they were there or not. Not much respect earned if ya lounging at Theater Hq's ie. 100 klicks behind the covering force.

King George VI and his wife, Queen Elizabeth toured many of the areas that had suffered from the heavy bombing. They showed the people of London that they cared.
During World War II King George VI visited Algiers, Algeria.

Colin Firth is playing King George VI in "The King's Speech." Has anyone else seen the preview for it? Looks like an interesting bit of filmmaking. Apparently there's a lot of Oscar surrounding it. Preview below:
