Hi,

I've inherited an interesting photo of my father.
The photo was taken in Africa during the 1940's
while he was in the Merchant Marines.

Is anyone able to identify what country it was taken
by the dress of the people in the photo?

Toddamo, unfortunately there is so little to go on...the clothing, the hats? I think you would hav e better luck talking to relatives and also researching where the merchant marines anchored during that year.... good luck!

You should be able to get hold of your father's military record and that will list where and when he was stationed.  Try this site:

Could be anywhere. Those hats were worn in Europe as late as the 1960s

If i was to hazard a guess i'd say Rhodesia, Zanzibar, Gambia, or South Africa. The British had naval bases there during the war

I am not aware of the British having ever had any naval bases in Rhodesia - especially given that it was / is completely land-locked.
