As a re-occuring term of many debates on this forum centres on the "race" of Turkic peoples. I've taken the pain to scan the internet of faces of the diverse Turkic-speaking nationalities, and to post their phenotype so that everyone could get a clearer idea.

There is no doubt that Turkic peoples today consist of a wide range of physical appearances, from pure European to pure Mongoloid.
Most probably, the situation was about the same 1500 years ago during the Gorturk empire.

I'll start from West to East.....

Crimean Tatars:

Their ancestral homeland was the Crimea Sea in the Ukraine. After WWII, Stalin deported a large number of to Central Asia after accusing them of collaborating with the Nazis.
Some have returned to the Crimea, but the bulk majority are still in diaspora.

They are a mixture of many different peoples of the Ukrainian steppes: the Kipchak Turkic tribes, Mongol invaders, Ottoman Turks, ancient Iranian nomads, Greek and Italian colonists....

The Azeris

The Azeris live in Azerbaijan, Iran, and Turkey.
They speak a Turkic language similar to Turkish, but they are Chiite Muslims. Many theories surround their origins, the most popular being that they are Turkicised Iranians and Caucasians.

Bashkirs

Inhabit an area East to that of the Volga Tatars. Their ancestors also include Finno-Ugric peoples. There's a theory that the ancestors of the Magyars could have formed the same tribe as the Bashkirs.

Supposed to be the direct descendants of the ancient Volga Bulgars. Currently, they are one of the only Turkic-speaking nationalities who practice Christianity. Many are becoming assimilated by Russians.

The Yakuts.

A isolated Turkic-speaking people of the Siberian Far East. Alongside with the Chuvash, they are one of the few Turkic people who profess Orthodox Christianity, although they have retained to a great deal Shamanist practices.
They thrive in an area where winter temperatures could drop as low as 70 degrees!
During the Soviet era, many Yakuts became "assimilated" into the Russian ethnicity.

Yakut politicians. Like politicians everywhere, they're not the best-looking people...
