What is the estimate of the Jewish population of the USSR before the Second World War?

I'm just curious as in class yesterday both me and my teacher came to the conclusion that the percentage killed in the Final Solution was not as large as say Poland or those residing in the occupied Western European nations.


I was just looking for an estimate to back things up.

Estimates can vary widely.  There are some very knowledgable people involved in this forum.  You might want to either do a search here or maybe ask the question in the Holocaust / warcrimes subforum.
