I'm not sure if this thread is appropriate here or what not.. Sorry if it is not I am new. Was wondering if you all could recommend me some books about the different African kingdoms. Makuria in particular interests me.

Why Makuria out of all kingdoms? As far as I know, it's an area very poorly studied by scholars.

An old thread, again. However, I believe there is a great book about Mali that comes from the times of Middle Ages Mali: The Sundiatta. The book on which was based The Lion King.
