Following the success of my similar post on the Classics forum....

Lets try and get some participation in this forum.

1. Thai nurses were the only women to serve in the trenches during wwi.

2. It is illegal to own a Buddha image in Thailand or take one out of the country. Buddha cannot have monetary value. Images have to be leased from the maker.

3. Malaysia runs the last apartied system in the world. Chinese and Indian Malays are considered second class citizens and descriminated against by the law. They are denied education by quotas and economic rights.

4. Lao.... On this neutral country from 1964 to 1973, the US Airforce flew almost 600,000 bombing missions, one every 9 minutes for 10 years. More ordinance was dropped on this tiny country than dropped by all sides in the whole of World War II. In the genocide the United States dropped hundreds of thousands 340-kilogram bombs and 100 million cluster bombs killing nearly a quarter of the population of the whole country. Between ten and thirty percent of the bombs did not explode, leaving 8 million to 24 million unexploded bombs scattered across the country today killing and maiming up to a thousand locals, mostly children, each and every year since the war ended.

5. Deer Cave (Gua Payau) in Sarawak, Malaysia, is the largest cave passage in the world. It stretches for 2km at a width and height never below 90m. The main cavern is 174m wide and 124m high. Basically, a Jumbo Jet could fly through it. It's also home to over a million bats, flesh-eating maggots and cockroaches, cave-dwelling snakes and swiftlets (whose nests are a local delicacy, made of purely bird saliva).

In fact, Russian nursed did the same; many of them were decorated for dragging wounded from the battle field right under German fire. By the start of Bolshevik mutinity, due to decreased morale there even were "women batallions" in the Russian army.

Yes, they even went to the attack of the German trenches, though without much success.

The article talks about that.

We'll need a Five Year Plan just to get to 50 points, nevermind 100...

6. Despite European pressure, Thailand is the only Southeast Asian nation never to have been colonized by a European country, thanks to capable rulers cleverly using Anglo-French rivalry for their own advantage.

Is the claim that the Thai nurses actually worked "in the trenches" or are we just being metaphorical here?

There are many things about SE Asia that I never knew, but I can't suggest any because I don't know what they are.

LOL

Yes, Russian Provisional Government had coonducted a lot of "advanced" military reforms. Including, for example, the famous Order N 1, which said that the attack only could be commenced if approved by voting of the majority of the unit.

Other than that, guys, I believe we already moved quite far away from SE stuff in this thread.

7. The Plain of Jars in Lao is one of the most mysterious places of earth. over 400 sites full of Jars from 1 to 3 metres tall cover the plain often in clusters up to 250.  They are estimated to be between 1500 and 2000 years old. No-one knows what they are for or who made them

8. Thailand was the first country on Earth to enter the Bronze-Age 3,600 bc, the site at Ban Chang has the oldest Bronze artifacts on Earth. Thai Bronze was superior in quality to the much later Mesopotamian Bronze and the Thais taught the Chinese how to make bronze.

9. The Hittites are credited with discovering Iron production. Ban Chang finds of Iron are the same age as the Hittite ones.

10. Korat in Thailand is the place of the world's first rice production. Today Thailand is the world's largest producer.

11. The island of Penang in Malaysia was the main distribution centre in the world for the Opium trade.

12. The traditional SE Asian New Year is in April. It is still celebrated in Cambodia, Lao, Thailand and Burma. Traditionally SE Asians mounted road blocs stopped people and splashed water on them and gently put talcom powder on their faces. Then the Thais went berserk and discovered water guns, then water cannon, then icy cold water barrels. Nowadays for the duration of the festival gangs stand on street corner and pickup trucks full of water and cannon prowl the road, anyone is fair game In in Thailand 2007, 506 people were killed and 5,500 injured making it the most dangerous festival in the world. Most were killed by drunk drivers or motorcyclists knocked over in traffic by water cannon. Burma, Lao and Cambodia under Thai influence are quickly adopting water cannon.
