USSR and USA built tons of nuclear-related weapons throughout Cold War. Both sides know how destructive nuclear warheads are, so why do they bother nuclear arm race? All the nuclear stocks from USSR and USA would easily wipe out the world, so why do they need to spend billions and trillions of dollars for nuclear warheads?

Are you asking this because you don't know or because you do, and are interested in hearing other's opinions and ideas (or both...)?

Well for starters, having a lot of nukes allows you to spread out your stock, which is important in geographically enormous countries like Russia and the US. It enables you to have nukes mobilised and on hand quicker.

A lot of it is just scare tactics - who creates the more imposing figure by having more nukes. This is the part I find questionable...

Simple reason. You must presume that most of your weapons will not survive an enemy attack and thus you must have enough left and in  various delivery methods (aircraft ballistic launchers etc) to ensure that you can still retaliate.

Actually the race was/is in fact the nuke olympics. It started with numbers, continued with size, then with effects and now we're witnessing the fine tuning. Next?

Why? The Americans "invented"(produced) that powerful weapon, and anyone who does not have it must fear the one who have it. The USA started a massive production, and since there was already a conflict between communists and capitalist, the USSR started it also. If they did not started the production, probably the soviets(and anyone else) would have to dance the American music if they like it or not.

That's a valid point. Nuclear weapons are useless if you can't deliver it to enemies. However, I'd like to just talk about the # of nuclear warheads for all intense of purposes.

Making more nukes are expensive. I don't understand why they bother to make more of them when they already had enough missiles to wipe out the planet. Making more missiles don't make Americans and Russians more powerful. They just have nuke surplus... for what? Who's gonna use them by the time the first nuclear war ends? Monkeys?

Pekau, they weren't building the nukes to have more, they were building them to have a better chance to a successful strike and off course, counterstrike. If you wish, technology adveanced faster than the ability to get rid of the old warheads. Try to fit a 1945 device in a 1980 MIRV. And nukes aren't just that. There are different types for different purposes. Therefore there are more warheads. Just counting them gets you to state that they could wipe eachother several times. There is no limit to the yield of a termonuclear device. What would you expect them to do? Build only one such thing for each potential enemy?

Think of the boomers. One Typhoon can raze half of the USA. Should the USSR have built only two subs, 40 missiles and 120 500kt warheads?

This is my understanding. If they explode all the bombs they have in USA and USSR, all civilizations die. If they build more, the Earth will have more radiations and more holes. Everyone will be screwed whether they have 100 or 1000 missiles, because 50 is the overkill.
