Topic: Bear vs Gorilla Posted: 07-Jun-2010 at 15:57 |
But, a lowland silver back, with an eight foot arm span, and the strength of three men (at least), and with a mighty jaw and great teeth, might make a favorable opponent to almost any bear if threatened and with no means of retreat?
This fight, if taken to the point of best three out of five, might well be one of the most interesting of all of the fights proposed?
I always loved "Mighty Joe Young!"

But, all bears can also climb trees!
Well, I am not too sure about Polar Bears?
But, I would well not think that one hungry enough could not climb one!

My understanding is that a Gorilla is not a match for a Kodiak bear.
Here are some Gorilla Photos

Again, I would propose that it is all in the savy of the animals! That is a lot of Gorilla power is reserved for bluff, and feint attacks, at least that is what I have gotten from watching gorillas in the wild via movies, vids, etc., as well as first hand accounts!
However, the strength of a large type of gorilla, if they are pound for pound as strong as a chimpanze, whoud be enormous! Even a fifty or sixty pound young chimp is far stronger than most strong humans! At least that is what I have been led to believe!
Transfer that to a 600 lb SilverBack, in the same proportions and the strength in the gorilla grows to something extrodinary! Thus, I would think that four of our strongest 350 lb men would probably face death fighting just one 600 lb gorilla!
Now just how much stronger, especially in the arms, and jaw catagory would a 1,000 lb bear have? Or would he via leverage, have any advantage? Of course those long bear claws (boy I like to eat them ) would have to be avoided since the gorilla has nothing more than finger nails much like a human!
But, again, I feel that if the gorilla was scared to near death, and it was no longer a chance of flight, then he might well be able to secure a place upon the backside of the bear? Note that the gorillas feet are also prehensile and graspable but I know nothing concerning their possible strength, so I must consider the strength of a humans leg as opposed to their arms and apply the same considerations, and thus assume that the legs and feet of a gorilla might well follow the pattern of humans and be about twice as strong?
Taking all of this into consideration (since this entire thread is based upon notions about which we have no real knowledge) then the gorilla, if it is able to gain an advantageous position, upon the back and front shoulders of any 1,000 to 1,500 lb. bear, then he might well win the encounter? But,if the bear is able to obtain the upper position or grasp the gorilla in a "bear hug" bringing into account both the great clawing power and jaw power from an above position, the the gorilla is probably just dead meat!
But it is fun considering such things, as horrible as they might well be, if seen in real life!

I gotta say... this is one of the BEST and well thought out questions.
Even though it's in the Martial Art section it's 100 fold better than
the Kimbo and Ninja questions of "who'd win" !!!
I'm back and forth on it. Equal weight here (heavy for a Gorilla, light
for a Bear) the Bear has claws and teeth and bites and strikes well yet
the Gorilla is 20 times stronger then man and over 10 times the agility
which means to me that the Gorilla could out maneuver the Bear. The
Gorilla is smarter then the Bear so let's not forget the mental factor
of combat.
The Gorilla's strength would enable the ability to tear limbs.
In the end for speed, agility, overall strength and ultimately SMARTS, I'd have to give it to the Gorilla. _________________ facebook backgrounds

I agree completely. With their strength and versatility, a gorilla is probably the best pound for pound fighter on earth.

I think most of the views here are prejudiced giving an upperhand to Gorilla. Gorilla may be 10 times stronger than a human, but how strong is a human even when compared with a small Indian sloth bear..?
Here is a comparitive analysis of a kodiak bear vs.polar bear
Now whether a Gorilla wins over a grizzly or vice versa is left to you

PANTHER BEATS HUGE GORILLA
But Victor Defies Efforts To Tend Wounds Received In Gory Battle SPOKANE, July 23 —(JP>— A sleek, powerful black panther, who tore a 300-pound gorilla apart in a long gory struggle, paced back and forth in his cage today, defying- efforts to tend wounds he suffered in the fight. The panther slipped under an unlatched 'gate at a 'wild animal show last night and pounced on the ape in an adjoining cage while nearly 400 • spectators watched in terror. ; They founght for more than two hours and at the end, the gorilla was shot and killed by attendants who were unable to separate them. The panther had torn off the gorilla's right arm and was clawing and chewing at his victim as the ape fought flat on his 'back. A huge lion in an adjacent cage slammed against his bars in an attempt to get •• into the fight. Shrieks of pain and .anger -from the battlecage Could be heard for almost a mile. ' . Sheriff Ralph Smith made a personal inspection of all the cages today and said he would permit the show to go on.. He said he wassatisfied that all were strong enough to keep the-animals from getting free. . The show was held at Liberty lake resort, 15 miles east?- of here. An attendant, who was discharged today, had left a connecting gate open between the cages, permitting the panther to get at the ape. . Ruby Smith, -trainer and part owner of the show, said the animals had been "feuding" since the cat tried to claw a'- the gorilla through the bars- three weeks ago

(Leopards killed 4+ gorillas)
http://www.berggorilla.org/en/gorillas/general/everyday-life/do-gorillas-have-enemies/
Dont know how reliable these are, but according from some scat analysis, leopards were found eating gorillas:
http://carnivoraforum.com/topic/9381679/1/
The gorilla has a hard time with leopards, a bear should have the advantage of more killer instincts, claws and the need to eat meat, funny though, where gorillas fail on leopards, grizzly bears even up to 1,000 lbs are killed by pumas. But since there is no fighting feats for the gorilla, its in favor for the bear.

The only way a Gorilla could win is if it received an intensive
fight training program, in which it learned effective methods
of evading the bears standard attack profile, & then defeating
it by using its strengths..
Grabbing the bears forelimbs, avoiding the claws & twisting them
out of the shoulder sockets, dislocating them..
Using hand grasp to force the bears lips over its teeth, a method
used by humans to prevent dog bites..
A headlock chokehold from behind, keeping out of reach of he bears weaponry..
Eye gouging, testicle twisting, trachea grasping & other 'dirty'
humanoid fighting tricks ought to be trained to the primate..
Aikido directional force techniques, joint grips & take down moves
could be trained too..
Properly prepared in this way, the brother from another mother
oughta be able to wipe the floor with the dumpster diving downtown brown..
Might make a good pay-per-view..

Curiously, there are a number of recorded instances of various primates being pitted against game fighting dogs, from monkeys & baboons through to apes such as gorillas & even humans..
By & large, our brethren acquit themselves rather well too, generally winning - esp' when properly trained/skilled..
