Topic: Worlds most bloodiest battle fields Posted: 05-Oct-2007 at 23:43 |
The area where the most battles that have been fought I think is the anceint site of Megidido and adjacent areas of the Jezeel Valley, better known as Armageddon, I present day Israel-Lebanon.
Just think about it the following nations and groups have fought and shed there blood here for the last 4,000 years; Egyptians, Canannites,Israelites, Midianites, Amalekites, Philistines, Hasmoneans, Greeks, Romans, Muslims, Crusaders, Mamlukes, Mongols, French, Ottomans, British, Australians, Germans, Arabs and Istralis.
You have an all star cast of famous generals and leaders who have fought here;
ThutmoseIII, Deborah and Barak, Sisera, Gideon, Saul and Jonathan, Shisshak, Jehu, Antiochus, Ptolemy, Vespasian, Saladin, Napolean, to just name a few.
This hot spot has been ground zero for so many battles that has determined the course of western civilization.
Many believe the final world battle will be fought here.
Can you find another region as bloody as this?

Places like Adrianopolis and Panipat have played host to a number of battle, but nowhere near Megiddo and the surrounding area. Thermopylae has actually hosted at least 3 battles. Some places just made good battlefields, because of the terrain and other factors.

Yes, Meggido is the site of the first documented battle in history, and if im not mistaken, the last "Battle of Meggido" was fought in 1918 when an army of Allied troops led by General Edmund Allenby, clashed with the defending Ottoman army. The region itself was strategically ideal in the sense that it was where all the major routes came together.

Panipat in India. At least 3 major battles. Sits on the last defendable piece of ground before Delhi. Istanbul.
Most of these places have suffered so many battles since they sit on invasion routes.

BeNeLux and the area of the North German plain, a classic migration/invasion route. The scene of numerous wars documented since Caesar fought the Belgae. 2000 years of bloodshed probably on a greater scale than Megiddo, i.e. 30 years war, Napoleonic wars, WW1 and WW2

Depends on how wide an 'area' you consider and exactly how you're scoring 'bloodiness'. A single (protracted) battle on the western front in WWI (e.g. Verdun) would far outscore a large number of ancient battles in terms of battlefield casualties. When you consider a 'strip' of territory in Europe from the Alps to the North Sea, including a strip of eastern France, western Germany and the low countries, you have a great many battles having been fought there, from the Roman era through to WWII.

You would think somewhere near the Russian and German frontiers would be the bloodiest with the Mongol invasions and the two world wars.

Verdun, especially if one considers how small the actual area is.
The final death toll, however, appears to have been revised from 600,000 to "only" 300,000. I have seen some estimates of 250,000 deaths.

Istanbul, it has been besieged countless times. I don't know any other city that has been besieged that many times. Not all of them were actual assaults but still they were all sieges.

In Europe, Belgium (specially the plain regions), Lombardy, Upper Saxony and the rgion around ancient Adrianopoli had the advantage. A concrete battlefield... Ypres.

Nobody here seem to mention the caucasus, one of the bloodiest regions in the world, from the Assyrian empire down to the Russo-Turkish wars and the recent conflicts in Chechnia, Georgia etc. I can remember some 20 battles that occured just in the last 500 years and were terribly bloody like Chalderan, Sarikamis, sieges of Kars, Tiflis etc.
