Topic: The Opposite of Fear Posted: 19-Sep-2007 at 01:30 |
I was wondering what the AE community thought of this so: What is the opposite of fear? I have heard many, many answers (some are quite strange), however, there are two largely ignored rules in determining this:
1) it must be an emotion, so security isnt it.
2) it has to not only negate the effects of fear, but counteract them as well (an equal and opposite).
I will try and post my oppinion later.

I could be an ass and say fearlessness but that's a cop-out.
Courage is the opposite of fear. Courage is reaching inside of ourselves and pushing aside fear to accomplish a task (counteracting it).
However I'm not sure of equality, not having confidence in your courage could make fear take over, but you'd need a lot more fear than courage.
I don't know perhaps fear doesn't have a true opposite. Perhaps it's just a lack of confidence.

Why isn't security an emotion? Never heard of a sense-of-security?

I don't think courage is the opposite of fear. Courage is as you say a conscious thing you do with your mind. Fear is an unconscious feeling that happnes to you out of your control.

The opposite of fear is excitement.
For example, if you have a fear of roller coasters, then going to
the amusement park can fill you with fear (assuming you were forced to go
on the rides). On the other hand if you like roller coasters then you
will be excited to go.
And sometimes fear and excitement are felt at the same time,
playing tug-of-war with your heart. An example of this might be to get
married. You will either be fearful, excited, or a bit of both.

The opposite of fear, to me, is confidence. I think even courage can be fearful, but confidence can not.

IMHO: To be in 'control'. Actually not too sure if it is an opposite or a 'remedy'. For, if u are in control, then you do not fear any possible event, because u are confident that you can bring it to end in a positive outcome.

You can still be fearful even though you are confident or courageous. Because in both instances you can say to yourself: "Yes, I am fearful and nervous today and I recognise that, but I won't let it hamper me"
A courageous man is still afraid like the rest of us, but he just bottles this up and continue anyway.

Well said, JanusRook. The opposite of fear is courage, naturally.

Anger. Anger is the opposite from fear. From anger courage comes forth.
