Im beginning to think there could have a great flood throughout Eastern Mediterranean lands and as late as 3000 BC. or even later. The reasons are not climate change, but the mysterious earth movement called isostatic rebound.

During the last Ice Age Europe and North America were covered by glaciers up to a mile high. They pressed the continents downwards. All dry lands are masses of earth floating on magna, a semi-solid belt of fluid earth deep in the planetary crust (this causes what is called continental drift). Even passing through an Ice Age tends not to cause massive flooding for as parts of the earth nearer the poles freeze the ocean levels drop, there is only so much water on this planet.

However when the glaciers thaw and the lands raise again so do the oceans owing to the massive bulk of trapped water being released. There are periods of flooding, for not all parts of the earth rise at a uniform rate and makes a very uneven process at best. Continental drift is one of the causes here for as the plates of land randomly drift into each other over millions of years. One will slide under the other or cause the opposing land to buckle and rise up as mountains for there is always great stress. The prime example of this is the Himalayas which are still rising while mountains ranges in Australia are falling because there is no pressure of one land up against another.

All this is very basic stuff, but the least known effect is how parts of a continent rise at a far more rapid rate than others, then fall back to former level to rise again at the more uniform rate - in other words isostatic rebound happens. The Mediterranean makes the worlds great hotspot. A complex series of geological events happened over the ages as the African plate locked into the Asian.

The last time this was known to definitely happen in the Mediterranean was during the 18th century, an island appeared and sank with months but they had absolutely no idea of what caused it at the time. I cant find the article but here are a few random selections

Im speculating how a sudden rising of land in historic times caused certain land masses to grow. The settlers rushed into the growing rolling grassy hillsides, surrounded by rivers and all perfect for grazing. The inhabitants gave blessing their gods for their gift and being human were so vain about it they didnt even ask why the rivers flowed around their heavenly land. Because the edges were sinking around their inland island thats why! This caused the formation of channels they thought were part of the gods blessing for they didnt have to go and dig them.

Then wherever the whole thing was situated would collapse virtually overnight causing rapid flash flooding before the land readjusted and started rising again. The sudden dowfall in the level of land triggers rain. So far as I know no evidence is left behind to indicate this process has ever happened on a local level. Forty days and forty nights could be a likely time frame for a flood that happened after years of certain areas rising and then collapsing within days causing rapid precipitation.

After 2500 there was a vast upset in settled lands with no reason given. Tribes hungry for land and from northern areas went on a massive drive southward to take advantage of instability of formerly stable countries. Suddenly what had been dry lands became wetter and more fertile and stayed that way for a very long time as countries changed hands.

The story of a Great Flood sent by a deity or deities to destroy civilization as an act of divine retribution for pride is spread around the world. It is best known in the story of Noah, it is also well known in other versions, such as stories of Matsya in the Hindu Puranas, Deucalion in Greek mythology and Utnapishtim in the Epic of Gilgamesh.

The stories Noah, Atlantis, Atrahasis, Gilgamesh, Sodom, Gomorrah, Gobekli Tepe may all have been based on memories of such a cataclysm. A meteor landing in the Mediterranean, melting glaciers or a massive earthquake could have easily submerged or buried many civilistions
