One of my first games ever, was Sid Maier's Colonization. Bought for my Amiga 500. Had for my first PC as well and spend many times in trading with the indian tribes and despoiling spanish towns and ships.
Here i may recommend a Free Windows versions of that game.

Other way round, SM's Colonization followed his original Civ game.

Incidently there is also C-evo, another freeware/opensource colII clone that adds different features.

Colonization is a fantastic game. I still play it now and again. Although Ulrich I used an IBM .
In fact, I have to download that.

It even comes with a linux version! I have a game for Linux LOL
