In 1986, Barbara Morgan and Christa McAuliffe were part of NASAs Teacher In Space program. Morgan had trained as McAuliffes backup for the ill-fated flight aboard the Challenger. The program was suspended after the Challenger exploded killing McAuliffe and her six crewmates. Barbara Morgan is now scheduled to be aboard the Endeavour when it launches on Aug. 7th together with six other astronauts to the international space station. Morgan stated that Christa McAuliffe will always be considered the first teacher in space. According to mission managers, Morgan will serve as Endeavours prime shuttle robotic arm operator during the flights three planned space walks. How exciting! Good luck to all of them.
