Although there was a gradual shift from the classical, humanistic sculptures of early Greece and Rome to a more stylized, spiritual design since the third century AD, when did freestanding sculpture end in Europe?

I understand that during the rule of Justinian a bronze sculpure of him on a horse was placed onto a collumn in Constantinople. Was this the end? Did emporers like Heraclius commission them well into the 7th century? And for that matter, when did the Roman tradition of busts for Emporers come to an end? I know of one for Zeno in the late 5th century.

Surely there has pretty well always been free-standing sculpture in Europe? Busts too for that matter, though not particularly of Emperors.

Plenty of romanesque and gothic statues around, at least - in wood, stone and occasionally bronze.
