Topic: Why was Rome called Chin in Han dynasty? Posted: 03-Feb-2005 at 22:38 |
During the Han dynasty, the Roman Empire was called "Chin". Same as the Chinese Warring State of Chin.
How come? Anyone know any reasons?

Was call by whom? Was documented by whom?
As Bandito said - we'd need to see the documentation to know where to begin to look.
AFAIK, the Romans never called themselves that, nor AFAIK are there any
records in the Greco-Roman, Egyptian or Persian sphere of influence for
this use of that term.
If the term was used only in China - you would have to consult a Chinese linguist or historian.

That's pretty interesting, Rome called Chin or Qin. Always thought the radical for any language concerning the romans would be rom-.

"rome wasn't only called the Qin, in fact it was called the "Great Qin"
The Chinese basically added "great" to every country's name.
Han dynasty was called "Great Han"
Tang dynasty was called "Great Tang"
The Chinese Chin dynasty was also called "Great Chin"

Maybe they thought that because the Romans were a great civilzation, they must be descendants of the Chin.
Just like the 16th century Europeans who thought the Aztecs and Incas
had to be descendants of the Europeans, for no other people were
thought to be able to build such great civilizations.

Qin there is the same word as the "Qin" Dynasty of China. "Da" means "Great."
The main reason for "Qin" was probably the western direction you would travel to Find Rome.

I took Da Qin to mean "Great Gold," because the Romans paid a lot of gold for Chinese silk.

Qin is not gold, Jin is gold. Qin is the name of a mountain range where the original Qin was located.
