Topic: 'Political Philosophy is dead.' Posted: 11-Jun-2007 at 03:12 |
In his introduction to Philosophy, Politics and Societ(1956) Peter Laslett famously declared that 'political philosophy is dead'. Its death was largely a consequence of important sh*ts in philoosphy, notably the rise of logical positivism. Logical positivism, originally advanced by a group of philosophers collectively known as the Vienna Circle,, refelcted a deep faith in scientific understanding and sugegsted that propositions that are not empirically verifiable are simply meaningless.
how could we counterargue Peter Laslett and the Vienna circle in the name of political philosophy so that we could resurrect it?

I think Laslett was talking from that Cambridge old folks home they call a philosophy deparment where the view stretches no further than that of a few antiquated analytical geriatrics.
For 20th century political philosphy just look at French Existentialism, Lukaks, Gramsci, The Frankfurt School, Stuctural Marxism, Postmodernism, Situationism and Lefebvre.

Yes, they're all alive.
Wrong, but alive.

You're implying that sometime in history there's been a 'correct' philosopher.

No I don't think I am. All philosophers could be incorrect.
It would be still possible I could be correct: I'm not a philosopher, merely a critic.
Or, which is the more likely, some philosophers may be more correct than others. One is not necessarily all correct or all wrong.
Unless you are Hegel.
