We all know about traditional Martial Arts exisiting now in the Eastern Asia: China, Korea, Japan, Vietnam, Indonesia, Phillipines, Indochina.

How about other parts of the world? Are there any historical evidence of smth. similar to the Far Eastern Martial Arts in Europe, Middle East etc. ?

Depends what you mean by martial arts.

Fencing is a martial art. So are archery, Graeco-Roman wrestling, Cumberland and Cornish wrestling, boxing, jousting, quarterstaff....

If you can include Kendo and judo as martial arts I don't see how you can exclude fencing and quarterstaff and the Western wrestling disciplines.

pub-brawling is a martial art...

Women hold their councils of war in kitchens: the knives are there, and the cups of coffee, and the towels to dry the tears.

The French have Savate, the fine art of kicking.
And the Russian army have Systema.
But thats just hand to hand (or foot) combat.

Technicly, any fighting system is a martial art, just that Hollywood has made inti a lame Ninja thing, so any society/culture with a tradition of maintaining armed forced is likely to have at least one refined martial art.

Russian army doesn't have systema. And there is nothing "traditional Russian" like systema.

All the things they say about their "art" on their website is BS. Russian however have a fine art called Sambo or Sombo. A fighting system based on Judo wrestling with elements of boxing and kicking.

However Sombo derives from Japanese Judo it's not "traditionally" Russian The same thing is with Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

Savate is indeed a very interesting MA.

I also heard about the similar fighting system in Spain (similar to Savate). Has anybody heard about it?

It's always worth bearing in mind The Raiders of the Lost Ark and Harrison Ford's answer to the multiple sword-waving character in the market.

In any army you learn some kind of hand-to-hand combat skills. One of the prime lessons is don't get involved in unnecessary fripperies like spinning around on one foot and all the other glamourised manouevres of so-called martial arts.

And another is never let the opponent play his game.

I thought Indiana Jones taught us the lesson, the best weapon in a sword fight is a pistol.

Russian army doesn't have systema.

There are a multiple of disciplines, that get dumped under the generic name 'systema'. Its not an exclusive spetsnaz (or whatever) only thing like those sites trying to sell DVDs claim. But it is used by various branches in some form or another.
Sambo is something different again.

What is this systema? I mean, one can say that Sambo is more or less a martial art. But this Systema concept is too ambiguous and vague.

I got the impression it was a mix of boxing and wrestling, with some fitness training thrown in for the mix.

That was my point.

Of course an AK-47 or even a Sten is better than a pistol.
