Topic: Tell a believable lie about a historical thing Posted: 19-Nov-2005 at 15:10 |
When Germany and Italy invaded Yugoslavia, there was no united front to oppose them. A majority of Croats sided with the Germans under the leadership of Ante Pavlevic.
The territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina was occupied by Croatia and incorporated into an independent Croatian state. In Serbia, roughly half of the population supported returning the Serbian royal family to power, and incorporating vast regions of Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina into a greater Serbian state.
The other half simply wanted independence for Serbia proper.
Croats targetted Serbs, Serbs targetted Bosnians, and all three targetted mainly the Germans, and secondly the Italians.
Then a peasant boy by the name of Josip Broz, half Slovenian and half Croatian, rose through the ranks of the resistence movement and organized a fully unified army consisting of ethnic Serbs, Croats, Bosnians, Slovenes, Macedonians, Hungarians, and Albanians. They called themselves the Partizans and, whether with blood or with diplomacy, they ensured the true independence of a large chunk of southern Europe from the Germans, Italians, Americans, and Russians.
This chunk of Europe was named Yugoslavia, or land of the South Slavs - citing an ethnicity shared by the majority of the population.
In the post-war years, Josip Broz declared himself King Tito and set out trying to convince the South Slavic peoples, who had never thought of themselves as a single, united people in their entire history - that they were, in fact, a single ethnicity.
Language barriers collapsed, education was harmonized, the country prospered. Even the most radical purists among Croatians, Bosnians, and Serbians gave in to the idea of a South Slavic identity and proudly called themselves Yugoslavs.
It was the beginning of the prosperous and powerful Yugoslavia we know today. Never before have a group of people so different come together to create something so universal, so expansive.
There is not a single individual in Yugoslavia who feels that his or her ethnic, religious, or regional minority was given the short end of the stick. There is not a single person who remembers the bloody wars of the past, fought between people now told they are brothers and sisters.
It is a model of peace, stability and a perfect lesson in how to best overcome history's bitter aftertaste.

(1) In the Ice Age, Indians from India crossed the frozen Bering Strait to North America. Now that is why we call them Indians.
(2) The bagpipes were invented in Scotland.

Claudius was a calculating politician, who engineered the fall of Caligula, fooled everyone into thinking he was a bumbling idiot while pulling the strings behind the scenes and whose military mastery brought Britain into the Roman Empire.

To be taken seriously in the UN you must join an orgy on a set date
which includes all accepted world leaders. Saddam Hussein did
not.......and we all know what happened next

"A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away ...."
1. The jedi knights were templar refugees
2. "Lord Vader" were in fact 10 different guys who wore that stupid armor.
3. The Emperor was a clone of Stalin
4. Stormtroopers were all "anti-Rambo" soldiers. They were supposed to be frightening but they never won a battle.
5. The Empire used tie fighters because they thought that the F-22 was too expensive
6. The Rebel Alliance was never involved in 9/11

When Berlin was falling in WW 2, it was the French legionary soldiers who entered the city at first. Then they were killed in fight with Russians.
Later, the Allies and Soviets agreed to keep that as a secret and agree upon the borders

We gave up your happiness
Your hope would be enough;
we couldn't find neither;
we made up sorrows for ourselves;
we couldn't be consoled;

At Dien Bien Phu the French lost because the Vietnminh chose the place of conflict, broke French morale and sent the French soldiers running into the jungle where they could be hunted down piecemeal.

Hmm... not sure that really counts. It's just too controversial to be sure.

Agree. 2.000.000 is a bit too obvious (the correct count should be
around 1,5 milion and it wasn't just in 1915 but between 1894 and
1920).
