i've heard that the vikings used to drink before they went on raids and when they went crazy they even killed some of their own men

is it one reason that europe was terrified of them

The precise meaning of the word Berserk is not entirely certain yet. The image we get from them from sagas are diverse and confusing. Drugs might be an option, mental disabilities another and there are several more theories.

As for the Vikings, I think Top Gun is right. Being dead drunk is not a good idea in the middle of a battle. You might feel invinvible, but in reality you will be slow as a slug and weak as a child. It is unlikely they drank a lot.

Of course afterwards it is a different story... Wink

(btw, moved to Medieval History)

Women hold their councils of war in kitchens: the knives are there, and the cups of coffee, and the towels to dry the tears.

Personally I find the whole animalistic transformation rite theory the most appealing, as extracted from the Saga of the Volsungs.

And no, I've never heard of this getting drunk before battles in any primary or secondary source.
