Topic: Joan of Arc, a leader or fighter? Or both...? Posted: 06-Feb-2007 at 21:51 |
Joan of Arc supposedly received the message from the angel that she must save France from English invaders. After convincing a French king, she led her army to defend France and push back the English invaders until she was captured by the English armies... and was doomed to die by being branded as a witch.
My question is... was Joan only a good leader and religious girl, or was she really talented in warfare? Was she excellent tactican? Was she even a good fighter?

I'm hardly an expert here, but from what I know there are two theories as to the nature of Joan of Arc as a leader.
As one theory goes, she was an actual political leader and general who took part in battle like any other, her saintly aura giving her a sense of higher justification. The other is that she was simply a figurehead, a rallying standard around which people would gather in support of the King, just like any other saint, the only difference being that Joan was not yet dead and present in the flesh and not just in the shape of some relic.

There is of course a third theory.
She was, a flag.

Interesting analysis. It's like a theory about what Holy Grail is in Da Vinci code. Now, do you have some source for this that you are willing to share?

She quite litterally WAS a flag as she most likely didn't fight much and even if she didn't couldn't change anything. But for the king of France having a quasi-prophet on his side was really good PR as due to the hardship French were particularly religious in these days.
When it comes to be a good tactician, it is very unlikely as these days tactics was a bit like: you see the guys in front? ok? chargeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!
The real tactician of the French king was Du Gueclin, who used guerrilla warfare. And then again he didn't revolutionized tactics, he was just good.

Isn't that what Joan did when she liberated Orlans?

Orlans did have a wall so the simple straight charge ain't really possible... But famously the English were surprised because the French did attack directly which seem to prove that she was good for moral but not a good tactician.

Was the liberation of Orlans her only victory, or were there some other battles that she won?
