In
1999, the German shipyards Abeking&Rasmussen and Lrssen Werft were
awarded with the contract about 630 million USD, of building 6 MCMV
ships. The contract was signed on 30 July 1999. First ship has been
built in Germany. The other ships are being built in Istanbul Naval
Yard. Contrary to the widely adopted use of GPR, these ships are made
of non-magnetic steel. Thus the Turkish Navy became the second navy
using non-magnetic steel in MCM ships, after German Navy. Each
ship will have 2 PAP-105 Mk5 mine counter system and Nautis-3M command
and control system. The Type 2093 variable depth sonar is hull mounted
and can operate up to 200m depth and 12 kts speed.

Italy's Agusta Aerospace Wins Turkish Attack Helicopter Contract
The contract is for the co-production of 30 Mangusta A-129
helicopters with an option for 20 more, Defense Minister Vecdi Gonul
said. The Turkish model will be named T-129.
The only other company to be shortlisted in the tender was Denel of
South Africa. Franco-German company Eurocopter and Kamov of Russia were
eliminated earlier in the process.
Denel's Rooivalk helicopter was powered by an engine manufactured by
France with whom Turkey suspended military relations in November in
response to proposed French legislation that would criminalize denying
that the mass killings of Armenians in the Ottoman Empire at the end of
World War I amounted to genocide.
Asked whether the use of a French engine in the South African model
and the tensions with France over the Armenian bill negatively affected
the selection process, Gonul said: "all aspects were evaluated,"
private Dogan news agency reported.
But Gonul said the main factor in the decision was the huge price
difference, the state-run Anatolia news agency reported. He did not
elaborate.
Turkey imposed new bidding rules for military contracts in 2005,
after it canceled a 2004 tender when a deal for U.S. firm Bell
Helicopter Textron's "King Cobra" a Turkish version of the AH-1Z
Super Cobra used by U.S. Marines collapsed over price, technology
transfer and licensing problems.
Turkey went through a low point in defense relations with Washington
following its refusal to host U.S. troops for the invasion of Iraq in
2003. It has actively sought out other potential arms suppliers, making
Turkey's business less attractive for U.S. companies.
The new rules also empower Turkey to substitute alternative, locally
manufactured components such as weapon systems, the mission computer,
avionics and electronic warfare suites, and require the supplier to
integrate other systems or equipment built by Turkish companies.
Turkey's concerns over technological control of its weaponry
increased after it faced arms blockades from several countries because
of human rights problems in its fight against Kurdish guerrillas, while
Washington demanded Turkish progress on human rights as a condition for
arms sales.

The Turkish Executive Committee has announced that it is to start
contract negotiations with AgustaWestland, in partnership with Turkish
Aviation Industry (TAI), for the Tactical Reconnaissance and Attack
Helicopter ATAK Project - for the Turkish Land Forces Command. The

a pretty good choice. A not too expensive light attack helicopter that will be co-produced, a condition the US couldn't swallow. Looking forward to learn about the modifications and improvements, wiki has some un sourced claims already...

The latest news, this was in doubt due to politics over some standard clauses (use around Cyprus). This new batch is more of a top up group that will mainly replace previously lost planes and a bit more.
TURKEY, UNITED STATES SIGN AGREEMENT FOR SALE OF ADDITIONAL LOCKHEED MARTIN F-16 AIRCRAFT TO TURKEYFORT WORTH, Texas, May 11, 2007 -- The governments of Turkey and the
United States have signed a Letter of Offer and Acceptance (LOA) for
the sale of 30 additional Lockheed Martin [NYSE:LMT] Advanced F-16
Block 50 aircraft to Turkey.
The new aircraft will supplement the Turkish Air Forces
(TUAF) existing fleet of F-16s and contribute to the upgrade and
modernization of the TUAF. The new aircraft include the same advanced
systems being installed on Turkeys existing F-16 fleet as part of an
on-going upgrade program. At the conclusion of these two programs all
Turkish F-16s will be in a common, state-of-the-art configuration. The
total LOA value for the 30 aircraft and equipment is approximately $1.8
billion (U.S.). Lockheed Martin and its supplier base will receive
approximately $1.1 billion of this amount.
Final assembly and delivery of the aircraft will be performed at
TUSAS Aerospace Industries (TAI) in Turkey, furthering the longstanding
business relationship between Lockheed Martin and TAI. | Sourceedit: the original request can be found here, and includes all the other associated equipment, that could bought in a packaged deal

this is more about balance of power. Greece has added quite a few brand new f-16's into their fleet over the last five or so years and has come quite close numerically, to the Turkish fleet. They had to update the fleet and replace ones lost over time, to keep a little ahead

Do they really have that much tention between each other that they have to keep looking over their shoulders? I mean, judging by these forums, you can see it's heated between the two nations, but what you say is they are preparing for a possible conflict, spending millions just on the possibility.

without getting into details, POV or polices. Its a cold war like rivalry that just keeps carrying on with odd flare up. No side (military) really wants to fight the other (very very costly), but not trusting enough to back down or change tact. thats my very quickly put opinion.
