Topic: Any Maritime Turkic groups? Posted: 14-Jan-2007 at 18:52 |
Most of the Turkic ethnicities/nations out there are usually steppe/desert nomads or Oasis dwellers, but were there any Turkic group that was engage in maritime trade?
The only one I can think of right now is the Ottoman Empire, which had alot of trade relations with other Med kingdoms and even sent warships to aid Aceh in Indonesia.
But are there any others? Crimean Tatar Khanate had access to the sea, and maybe some of the other former Golden Horde Khanates?

One of the most famous Ming dyansty chinese admirals Zheng He was an Uyghur Turk. If he could reach the position of admiral, it is fair to question how many other turks may have lived lives as sailors.

Originally it is said he was from modern day Ozbekistan-Kirgizistan-Uygur region, the Chinease had slave-mamluk soldiers protecting their court, some families became well known like his one.
Hui are mostly made up of Chinease, Manchu, Mongolian, Turkic, Arab, Iranian basically any muslim group outside the historically non-Chinease Uygur region.

Seljuks of Kirman attacked and seized Oman under Melik Kara Arslan Kavurd by ships provided by Emir of Hrmz Bedr s ş. Seljuks of Rum had also maritime abilities. Aleaddin Keykubat conquered Alaiye(Alanya) and build a dockyard as a base of mediterranian navy and there was one dockyard in sinope for a black sea navy. Some raids to crimea by seljuk navy are recorded. And also many of the Turkish begligs had navies mainly Candar, Aydın and Karesi.

Turks started to be interested with sea in Sultanate of Rum(Anatolian Seljuks in Turkish), not Ottoman
Alanya castle and Shipyard were built in Sultan Kayqubad I
Byzantine and Sultanate of Rum sea battles
After the collasing of the country the amiral of Umur and Tzackas had own land and financed their land with piracy
also some other sister anatolian beyliks of Ottomans had important navies as Karasid, Ottoman became the sea power after they took the Karasid (This was also their first achievement against other Anatolian Beyliks)
BTW they became the owner of Asian side of Dardanelles

Umur Beg was the one of the famous Turkish Begs who had a big fleet. He defeated Crusader fleet and Venetians. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Umur_Beg Chaka Beg was the other Turkish commander who ruled Smyrna. He was prisoned by Byzantium. After he took his Freedom, he founded his own Beylik in Smyrna. He was mighty and powerful. He besieged Constantinople with ships. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tzachas http://dogutarihi.files.wordpress.com/2010/06/caka.jpg?w=300&h=233 Here, there is a ship of Chaka's fleet. Aruj Baba (Oruç Baba), Barbarossa Hayreddin, Turgut Reis are most famous Turkish corsairs. But, Turgut and Hayreddin Pasas ruled the coasts of North Africa as Beğlerbeği (Beg of Begs) of Ottoman.
