Topic: Your favorite Native American Posted: 11-Nov-2006 at 09:20 |
Native Americans are know worldwide because of theirs ferious resistence to the assault of the peoples of the Old World that came to robb theirs lands. They are also know as the creators of some misterious cultures, like the Olmeca, Chavin, Moches, Mayans, Aztecs, Incas, Kahokians, Anazasis and lots of others.
In short, people around the world knows at least something about them, and some of theirs figures. So I wish you share who is, in your oppinion, the most important Amerindian for you and why.

And I also voted . For Tezahualcoyotl who was an extraoridinary poet (his poetry is preserved in Nahuatl), a king and protector of artists, and architect, and the designer of the aqueducts of Tenochtitlan. He was the king of Texcoco, a city that has been called "the Athens of the Americas".

I do not exactly have a favorite, but I do like Tecumseh and Pontiac. They both led some pretty successful campaigns.

They both led Confederacies of various indigenous tribes. Pontiac's campaign were during the French and Indian War(he led many successful campaigns up around Michigan, but in the end he lost at the Battle of Bushy Run). Tecumseh's campaigns were after the American Revolution, in the end, it was not him, but his brother who lost at the Battle of Tippecanoe.

I always liked Pancho Villa. He sold out in the end, but had a pretty wild time before then.

Hey Pancho Villa was not Native American . His looks were closer to a WASP, indeed. He was a poor white peasant.
On the other hand, Emiliano Zapata was a person of mixed Indigeneous-European ancestry, but not ethnically indigeous. His family were middle class farmers. Here with his brother:
The figure that was really Native American is Benito Juarez. He was a lawyer and brillian politician in the "white" society, although he was a Zapotec Amerindian. Benito Juarez (1806-1872) was President of Mexico in two term 1861-63 and 1867-72, and is one of the most beloved figures of that country. He rejected the French invasion and is the only full blood indian that has governed Mexico.

I've always liked Tecumseh.
I'm not really sure why but I think it was that he was the last hope for a large number Native tribes, was a very charismatic leader, and many of his quotes really help non-natives to see their point of view and culture more clearly.

Not at all. You should realize the following:
(1) From the genetical point of view, most Mexicans are Mestizo (Indian-European) in varying degrees, but there are still large groups that are pure Amerindian and pure European. And I said European because not all inmigrants were Spaniards.
(2) From the cultural point of view all Mexicans live in a Western society, speak a Western language and have a Western mentality. Even the ones that are poor, are poor in the Western style (look poors in Italy or Southern Europe and you'll realize that). That shouln't be confussed with the extreme nationalism of Mexicans that makes them to embrace everything Aztec. Now, from the cultural point of view, once again, an Amerindian has to speak a Native language, keep a Native American culture alive, belong to an Amerindian tribe and district, and have a certain "blood quatum". Less than 10% of Mexican meet those requirements.
By the way, Pancho Villa was a white fellow by all racist standards of the U.S. His style of live, was the one of the poor Mexican peasant... at least for publicity.

If you do the maths, 2 parent, 4 grandparents, 8 great grandparents, 16 great great.
4 generations per century. That's 20th century 16, 19th century 256, 18th century 4000, 17th century 32,000, 16th 256,000. So every person in the Americas has around a quarter of a million great great...... grand parents since Columbus..... Can you account for the background every single one of these 256,000 ancestors for each and every single person in Mexico?
Fact is there's no such thing as purity, everyone in the world is mixed.

Very true. But in Mexico you can still find second generation European immigrants, and Natives isoloated that have not admixture with Europeans ... as yet.
Anyways, I believe Pancho Villa was as Amerindian like Bill Clinton, to say in some way.
