Actually based upon authoritive sources, Wikipedia has this to say;
"Aware that they were being outflanked, Leonidas dismissed the bulk of the Greek army, and remained to guard the rear with 300 Spartans, 700 Thespians, 400 Thebans and perhaps a few hundred others, the vast majority of whom were killed."
It is my understanding from other information that the 700 Thespians voluntered and the 400 Thebans were literally forced to remain! Wikipedia also mentions that 1,000 Phocians were delegated to guard the secret pass around the defile. So the total is more like 2,500! Not counting the supporting cast of armor bearers, etc.
But, there remains other stories concerning a valiant and lost group of 300 or so knights / warriors, etc., who met impending doom, some of which also occured near Thermopylae!
Either here or in other places on this site, I will post them, as well as other engagements where the number 300 is of utmost importance!
