http://www.chn.ir/shownews.asp?no=15229 (Persian site)

As you know Tabriz was the capital of Atropatene, named for Atropates, one of Alexander's generals who sent to Alexander a troop of Amazons.

About this Skeleton, Dr. Hazbari, head of the excavation team, says "at first it was thought it is a man warrior but DNA tests showed that it is certainly the skeleton of a woman warrior". He also says "She was a exceptional woman who could have a high social rank, her big and powerful body and her very large sword also show that she was probably a General!"

Interesting find. When it comes to the "Amazons" Arrian mentions that indeed some women "dressed as warriors" were send to Alexander but he dismissed them at once and send them back fearing that his troops might emmm "misbehave" towards them!

Actually a russian team found a burial mound in the ukraine that dated back to the scynthians. It turned out that this tomb contained an "amazon" warrior-priest. They compared the dna from this tomb to that of a blond uzbek girl in mongolia and they were astounded to find that the genetic material matched! How they deduced to say that there is a connection between the turkic nomad and this "amazon" I didn't understand.

Actually, that may not be that far off. The girl probably is called Uzbek because of language and where she comes from. The area today covered by Uzbakistan was not always inhabited by turkic people. If the historical assumptions on movement of Aryan nomads are correct some of the people coming from that area should have matching DNA. This may also point to a more recent migration

Uzbek is considered to come from two turkish words: vz, which means "genuine," and bek, which means "genuine man." The Uzbeks are a mixture of nomadic Turkic tribes and ancient Iranic peoples.
