Topic: Shape of the eyes Posted: 13-Aug-2006 at 14:49 |
does anybody have information about the connection between the shape of the eyes and an ethnic origin? I know about slanted eyes and so on , but is it also possible there are eyes that are a mixture of different shapes of the eye?

The question I've always had is why did slanted eyes develop in East Asia? Unlike the polar regions, it does not have any more intense sunlight than the rest of the moderate regions of Earth. On top of that, some Chinese provinces, especially in Southern China, have extremely cloudy and extremely foggy days for large portions of the year.

Hazel is just a slightly ligher shape of brown. Otherwise the eye is just green.

its true most turks have hazel eyes. I have hazel eyes too. But in my family there are people with green or blue eyes, so as far as I know colour has nothing to do with ethnicity , I think shape does?

Good point. Because I heard it multiple times on this forum that slanted eyes are mother nature evolution to reduce eye exposure to extreme cold temperatures and dry winds. Doesn't make sense really considering that the same conditions are presented on various regions on the globe, yet, only Asians developed that "advantage".
considering the fact that Human immigration from Africa to Europe is older that the immigration to East Asia. It is hard to believe mother nature will adopt the recent comers to East Asia properly but fail to do so to comers to Europe.

Well, there is a controversy going on about weather Asia follows the complete replacement model or that of regional continuity. Chinese paleoanthropologists believe they have a H. erectus dating approximately 200,000 y.a. wich has some modern features (the Jinniushan skeleton, Tiemel et al., 1994). This suggests thry have their own lineage.
But...
Most believe that it's a regional variant of a H. heidelbergensis. Which are predominately an African and European premodern.
Who knows. So many controversies in anthro. I love it.
Edit: Also there is the Ordos find which supposedly has modern material from 50,000 y.a. (Physical Anthropology, Essentials of, 2006)

I think the dominant eye color in Turkey is probably dark brown. Light eye colors such as green and blue are, I'd guess, under 10% of the total population. And those are probably from converted Balkan populations. Would I be wrong in thinking this?

the balkan populations consisted also of turkic people (turkic people migrated back to turkey) so you are both right. But there also could be a little non-turkic balkan influence. But the topic is about the shape of the eyes can we please stay ontopic

Hmmm.....I still don't know. I've seen Turks with vibrant and beautiful blue eyes before, but the vast majority almost looked like they had extremely dark brown eyes. Even if you look at the Turkish members in this forum (in the photo thread), they mostly look very dark brown. I'd even say most Mediterranean Europeans have dark brown eyes.

Your family may not represent the entire population, though. Both of my parents, my grandparents, and my great grandmother have blue eyes. I'm actually the odd one in my family with muddy green-blue eyes. Even most of the people in my school and workplace have light eyes. (Wisconsin has a lot of Germans, Scandinavians, and Irish)
From that statement, would you infer that all people of European decent have light colored eyes?
I'd be curious what the percentage of blondism is in Central, Eastern, and Southern Turkey. I mean, I don't know what part your ancestors came from, but they may have decended from a Greco-Slavic-Anatolian mix.
