The man who became president of Peru is Alberto Fujimori. He was the son of Japanese immigrants to Peru, their names being Naoichi Fujimori and Mutsue Fujimori. Fujimori was commonly known to the public as El Chino because of his ethnicity. Before him was Vargas Llosa who proposed the phrase Work, technology, honesty to try to revive the economy. Fujimori, however went farther than that, so drastic that it actually helped Peru boost itself up to the re-entry of the global economy. He then started processes of privitazation, which in the past the philosophy of the govt was to own everything and do everything for the people.

In Fujimoris first term, two different parties headed both chambers of congress, which in turn hampered Fujimoris power. Thus he set up a coupagainst himself and his own government. This was done so Fujimori can restructure the systems of the peruvian government and the constitution as to increase his own power. The public actually did not take offense to this. The dissolving of the government and such actually had a 73% approval rating!
Before and while Fujimori was elected there was a terrorist organization. An insurgent Maoist group Sendero Luminoso (a.k.a Shining Path) Both of my parents lived in fear of this group as so did the rest of Peru. They were that terrible. Fujimori is credited by many Peruvians for taking down their leader Abimeal Guzman (who is still in prison to this day) and other leaders of the terrorist group. Thus he ended the reign of the most powerful terrorist group who held almost 60% of the country in their grip. Fujimori though used many unhumanitarian methods to detain these terrorists though. While the past two presidents tried to follow the rules and failed, Fujimori basically said f**k you to the rules, captrued, and tried them with very little rights and freedoms.

More on Fujimori later.
