ALBANY, N.Y. - New York Gov. George Pataki has signed legislation that creates a French and Indian War 250th Anniversary Commemoration Commission.
The 19-member commission is charged with promoting the 250th anniversary of the war that pitted Britain and the American colonies against the French and their Indian allies.
The first shots in the war were fired in western Pennsylvania in 1754. The major fighting ended in 1760, with France surrendering Canada to the British in a treaty signed three years later.
In between those years, upstate New York was the site of several important battles, from Lake George in the east to Fort Niagara in the west.
The commemoration commission will be in charge of promoting French and Indian War anniversaries beginning next year and running into 2010.
Major events such as battle re-enactments are planned during that span in Lake George, Ticonderoga, Fort Niagara and elsewhere.
