Just like the Japanese who established the puppet state of Manchukuo, the Russians also set up their own puppet state called the "Far Eastern Republic" in 1920.

The Far Eastern Republic (Russian: Дальневосто́чная Респу́блика (ДВР); English transliteration: Dalnevostochnaya Respublika (DVR)) was a government established in the Russian Far East and Siberia east of Lake Baikal on April 6, 1920. It was created for the reasons of external politics, as a "buffer state" between the RSFSR (Russian Soviet Federated Socialist Republic) and the territories of the Far East occupied by Japan. Although nominally independent, it was mostly controlled by RSFSR.

After the Japanese evacuated Vladivostok, on November 15, 1922, it was merged into the RSFSR.

It occupied the territory of modern Chita Oblast, Amur Oblast, Khabarovsk Krai of Russia (was: Transbaikal, Amur, and Primorsky oblasts). Before October 1920 its capital was Verkhneudinsk (now Ulan-Ude), and after - Chita.

Postage Stamps
The Republic issued a number of postage stamps during its brief existence. Initially it overprinted stamps of Russia, then issued its own designs. Large numbers of these were produced, and are readily available today, although genuine usages on cover are seldom seen.

This republic lasted only 2 years, very temporary, as the Russian revolution took place in 1917, perhaps its existence has something to do with replacement of Tsarism by communism in Russia, also with Russo-Japanese relation.

"Allied forces had long since abandoned their positions, but Japanese forces remained in along Russia's Pacific coast. In April, 1920 the Bolshevik Alexander Krasnoshchekov declared the establishment of an "independent" Far Eastern Republic based in Chita and claiming sovereignty over territory occupied by Japan. While Krasnoshchekov was plainly a Leninist puppet, he purported independence won the support of many wavering factions who might have resisted a frankly Communist regime. Japan withdrew from Vladivostok in late 1922; soon afterwards, the Red Army (not the army of the Far Eastern Republic) took Vladivostok. Four weeks later the Far Eastern Republic puppet voted to unite with the rest of Soviet Russia. As Landauer observes,  "[T]he Bolsheviks knew only too well how valuable the relative freedom of Finland had been to Russian revolutionaries under the tsarist regime. Lenin and Trotsky were not willing to run the risk of letting opponents find a refuge in Eastern Siberia; hence that country was ruled by the same relentless methods which were used against all dissenters from communism in the rest of the Soviet Republic..." (European Socialism: A History of Ideas and Movements) "

from this perspective, i incline to think the two republics are not necessarily comparable in certain contexts.

Part of Imperial Army strategy after the evacuation of Vladivostock (Lord of the East-the coolest city name ever) was to eventually return against the Soviets and set up a puppet white Russian government in the 30's or 40's, but the navies plan to take the European and AMerican colonies in the south won due to the needed rubber and tin resources there.
