He probably fighted in the Vichy French Army in africa (see the flag in the lower left corner).

That's my distant cousin Piere Von Shifty Dafrica- I have this picture in my photo album at home.

Just quickly to explain the name - "Piere" (french for Peter) - named after Peter in the folk tale Peter and the wolf. The "Von" was added later in his life - after he got captured by the Germans - just so he could fit in. The "Shifty" - is just some middle name we give to all the Shifty members of the family. The word "Da" and "Africa" were merged into one. "Da" coming from the italian word mean "from". (obviously to identify his african routes)

Piere, originally from France. During WWII when the Germans took control he was sent to fight in Africa, under the control of Rommel. You can tell by the hat he is wearing in the picture, that he was fighting for the germans. 

The uniform does seem to me very similar to the standard uniform given to the german soldiers who fought in Africa, i'd imagine he was either forced to or did so voulenterily (sp), sewed the French patch on his arm - to identify him as being from france - to avoid being spoken to by Germans when he wouldn't understand them.

This photo was taken early the african compaign, when things were going well for the army. He died when Rommel ordered the retreat* later in the war, when the germans were low on supplies and fresh men. Piere had tripped and twisted his ankle apparently - and was after shot dead by sniper who thought he'd put Piere out of his misery (presuming he was in pain from a bullet - as apose to busted ankle)
