Topic: Ancient History - is this true? Posted: 23-May-2006 at 13:15 |
I just read some stuff concerning ancient history at a website, it's an on-line history book I guess. I think that I got a decent education, but I was never taught anything like that. Can anyone tell me if that stuff is true. It's at http://www.realhistoryww.com

Looks to me more like a 'sub search engine' for a number of things not necessarily a 'direct history site'..........and as I don't know what you were reading about I can't really help out....sorry

I agree that it's well written, but some of the chronology seems strange, it would be helpful if it was referenced.

Have heard about it, laughed about it, and forgotten about it.

I too had read it, and forgotten about it, had to google it. A mind is a terrible thing to waste. I will bet though that he makes a bundle on the creationist lecture circuit.

Maybe it is funny. But, isn't it strange, to have "dark centuries" between antique and renessaince?

They are anything but dark. There has been plenty happening outside of Western Europe during that time. Just look at China, the Arabs, the Byzantines, and other parts of the world where civilizations were not only flourishing, but keeping excellent independent records that were simply ignored by that crackpot Fomenko.
Even in Western Europe, records and archeological evidence of the history of the period exist. The term and the reputations of the "dark ages" have simply been invented by Renaissance and Enlightenment scholars who were out to undermine the intellectual authority of the church. Calling the period which was dominated intellectually by the church, as simply "the dark ages", is an effective way to make a statement against the church.

"... "dark ages" have simply been invented by Renaissance "
By the way, it is what Fomenko wanted to prove.
And what about his statistical methods, are they wrong? Who and when wrote generally accepted chronology?

Fomenko's statistics are a crock. I don't know what his agenda is but it isn't accurate history. I particularly like the challenge issued by his publisher, they offered 10,000 to anyone who could prove any artifact older than the 11th cent. The catch, you can't use archeological, dendrochronological, paleographical or carbon dated evidence.
He completely ignores evidence such as coinage from 23 ad forward, papal bulls, any church documentation and all written records from the Roman Empire. In short, this guy's a quarter short a dollar.

Where they are?
P.S. What means "crock"? Do You deny use of statistics in the history study?

Sorry, I know this is irrelevant and not really contributing to the topic (at second thought, perhaps it is...) but I couldn't resist!

No one said science is evil but you. Statistics in history are a valuable tool, however they can be used in many ways to support unfounded ideas.
If, as I believe you are a creationist who thinks the earth is only 6,000 years old and that science and evolution are wrong, we have nothing more to say to each other. I won't discuss anything as ludicrous as that.

The Formenko stuff (eg: http://lib.ru/FOMENKOAT/engltr.txt) is
pathetic. A collection of half truths, very selective evidence
and plain outright lies, written by people who have obviousl not even
looked at the documents they are discussing.

I began to read about Prehistory,
it is oldfashioned because the lack of dates (for example, out of
frica after 500.000, when we know that was before) and the
missinformation for example the guanches-"Cro-Magnon" of North Africa,
in fact the Berbers, didn't come from Southern and Central Europe, but
they were a branch of the Homo sapiens from northeast Africa and Middle
East that expanded to Moghbreb... Another, the neardenthals today can't
be named Sapiens, were two differents human groups.
