the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick III. of Habsburg started to inculde this set of vocals on many official buildings during his reign. no one is sure what exactly it means, there are three (rather similar) possible meanings:

Austriae Est Imperare Orbi Universo

Austria is destined to rule the world

Austria Erit In Orbe Ultima

Austria is eternal

Alles Erdreich Ist sterreich Untertan (German)

the whole earth is subject to Austria

seal from 1446, showing the vocals AEIOU togetehr with the coat of arms of Lower Austria, Austria proper/Habsburg and Upper Austria.

www.aeiou.at very good database about everything on Austrian culture and history.

Didn't the Austrians once aspire to rule over every German state until their defeat at the hands of the Prussians?

the Habsburgs were the nominal leaders of the minor German states but they didn't had much power over them and especialy after the Religious wars they lost even mroe influence voer them. after the apoleonic wars the HRE was completely resolved and the Austrians didn't held any more power over them, however, due to the rise of nationalism during the napoleonic wars, Prussia and Austria sought for a new all-encompasing German empire with one of the both as the leading country. after the napoleonic wars prussia gained a lot of territory in Germany itself, while Austria lost much of it's holdings in Germany; and especially after the Prussian-Austria war of 1866 (in which most German principalities were allied to Austria-Hungary), Prussia was not only able to destroy Austrian prestige and gain the support of the other German states, it also paved the way for a unified Germany founded after the French-Prussian war of 1870-71.

I think you are confused, Austria, Prussia and the germans states were different entities. All that linked them together was language. Austria was once a very powerful nation, but it was totally destroyed after WW1, losing hungary.

If one were really to consider our historical Austria, one whould have to consider just how it, at one time at least, so much resembled the so called Roman Empire, as well as the so called Gothic Empire(s)!

In reality the real greatness of the Austrian Empire only existed during Hapsburger / Habsburg-er Empire (one can even use "berg" if one pleases). But how does one explain "Hab" and "Hap?" Maybe it was at one time "Habbas?" or "Happas?"

In any event, this empire (The Austrian-Spanish Habsburger), like the Roman and Gothic, had Eastern and Western divisions! One supposedly based in what is now considered Austria, and the other in what is now considered as Spain. In between were numerous smaller states, that were absorbed or conquered, or taken via marriage, or papal decree, etc. Thus, even the area now known as the Netherlands was a part of this empire, and a very important one!

Maps, (drawn under the eye and direction of historians) can show you the range of these territories which seemed to vary as the winds blow!

But, at the height of its (The Spanish-Austrian Empire) conquests (by what ever means), this empire also encompassed a large part of both N. and S. America! And if Dutch (Netherland) possessions in the Far East, Near East and India, etc. are considered, then it was true for this empire as it was for the British, that "the Sun never set(s) upon it!"

In some regards Charles V, may have been the most powerful emperor (Reignier) who ever existed? If you wonder about my use of "Reignier" I would refer you to Shakespeare and "Elizabethan England!"

Do most of you believe the old saying "History tends to repeat itself!"?

Do most of you believe the saying, "One who fails to learn from history is doomed to repeat it!"?

Just maybe the Roman Empire (East and West), and the Gothic Empire (East and West) and the Habsburger Empire (East and West) are merely differing views of the same thing, with some mistakenly thrown into the past?

The "Dutch possesions"  in Asia can't be added to the Habsburg house/empire, since the Dutch conquered  them after the Spanish were driven out the Netherlands.

Instead of adding it was the reverse.    Dutch colonies like South india , Ceylon , Malacca , Taiwan etc.  were conquered from the Spanish Habsburg and Portuguese.

You are of course correct (I think?)

Thanks

As regards "AEIOU", I can offer no suggestions that you have not mentioned, but when it comes to Latin abbreviations many things seem to be possible? For instance "A" by itself and "EIOUS", which could conceivably be the name of "Iesus", etc.?
