WOMEN and SPORTS
River Rafting, Konjic, Bosnia and Herzegovina
What are the most popular sports for women in your
country? How are they different from men? How has this changed over the
last several generations?
In Bosnia and Herzegovina, there is really only one sport women were
traditionally associated with - horse racing. Female jockies were and
remain extremely rare - but actually did exist as far back as the early
1900s.
Modern sports that have attracted large groups of female participants
and followers include football/soccer, basketball, volleyball, golf,
figure skating, gymnastics, weight lifting (Bosnia actually has one
world title female competitor, I forget her name), and extreme sports -
such as river rafting, hand gliding, and parachuting.
All of these sports are much newer to women than to men but they're all
fairly new in Bosnia and Herzegovina, having been introduced within the
last 5-6 generations.
Women's sports teams in Bosnia and Herzegovina do not receive nearly as
much attention as men's sports teams but they are generally respected
by their male peers. There's not so much of the 'teasing' and other
things you see in movies and so on.
