It seems they are still removing the sand from it and studing to determine the age!!

http://www.chn.ir/english/eshownews.asp?no=2606

In a bid to determine the age and the best method of preservation, the second phase of archeological studies started on a newly-discovered ancient ship off the Caspian beach of the northern Mazandaran province.
The sailing ship measures 26 meters in length and 7.5 meters in width and is discovered near Zaghmarz coastline in the city of Behshahr. Last year studies failed to determine the exact age of the vessel.
Last year police informed Iranian Cultural Heritage Organization (CHO) on the sighting of a wooden ship. The first phase of archeological studies, thus, started to remove the sand from around the hulk, said Saman Sourtiji, archeologist with CHO. Since the vessel had been submerged in water for a long time, it had become too heavy to be heaved toward the beach.
He noted the second phase would focus on salvaging the ship and determining its age, while the sand would be scooped out of the deck.

I am not suprised theres a Viking longship in the Caspian sea.  Vikings helped settle Russia and there are many rivers that go into that sea.  Also, Viking ship technology was very advanced.  Maybe someone got envious and made a copy too!

It wouldn't surprise me if the Vikings had gotten that far.  At their peak, they were threatening Byzantium, of all places!  An adventurer in the vein of Eric the Red could well have been trekking towards China on trail of Silk Road caravans.

Ingvar the Faretraveller looted along the Caspian Sea coast, but if that ship has the dimensions 26x7.5 meters I can surely and sadly say it is not a Viking ship. The east-going ships were rather small so be able to be carried - say 10-15 meters at most - and 8 meters is too wide for a Scandinavian ship. It would be nice to have some pictures.

There's a great link that was posted by a new member just before the crash - about a group of scandanavians taking a viking ship overland as was once done along some of the asian trade routes.

http://www.vittfarne.com/

Lots of good pics of their expedition - which is ongoing - and a map function - click on Till Loggboken for their current location (somewhere in Azerbaijan).  Map is mostly good - but sometimes it throws me into Africa?

The Vikings  certainly had a great comercial enterprise on the Many rivers of Russia, especiall the Don and Dneiper, so it stand to reason that they had activity on the Volga.

There are hoards of coins in Sweden some 60-70.000 Roman and mostly Arab* coins have currently been found, though new batches turns up now and then, from under stones, old cellars, caves etc.

*all coins from the Middle East are often refered to with that name, call it ignorant if you want. Though lately I have heard them being called "Islamic coins" instead. The Royal Coin Cabinet, where a lot of the coins have ended up, know what they're talking about though.

But it's WRONG, The Smnids didnt view themselves as an arab OR Islamic dynasty, but an Iranian dynasty, Ferdsi the Great had enormous support from them.

There was a Viking attack on Azerbaijan in 954 A.D.  I wonder if this ship took part in it?  Here's what I had to say about the event on one of my webpages:

"A raid from an unexpected direction displayed the weakness of the Caliphate and its Buwayhid overlords.  In 954 twelve hundred Swedish Vikings sailed down the Volga River out of Russia and entered the Caspian Sea.  Going down the coast until they reached Azerbaijan, they turned inland and went two hundred miles up the Kura river until they reached Barda'a, a city with about 10,000 inhabitants.  Under normal circumstances the local Moslem commander would have thrown them back into the sea, since the Vikings lacked cavalry and were outnumbered four to one.  The Vikings, however, had heavy shields to protect themselves from the arrows of the Arab archers, and when the two sides closed in for hand-to-hand combat, the berserk fury of the Norsemen carried all before them.  Barda'a was captured, and the Vikings beat off every Moslem attempt to retake the city for a year, inflicting ghastly numbers of casualties every time they sallied forth from the city walls.  Eventually an enemy the Vikings could not fight, disease, became a problem, and about four hundred of them slipped out under cover of darkness and returned home, with as much booty and as many slaves as they could handle."
